The key has to be in the switch, battery unhooked, turn key to start position, insert probe into small hole above cylinder to trip the wedge, and pull out.
Hello: It sounds like the tumblers came loose in the ignition lock cylinder. You will need to replace the lock cylinder and possibly the key to. A worn key is hard on the lock cylinder.
Your key could be worn too much or the cylinder could be seized. Spray the cylinder with pb blaster or wd40 with the key inserted in the cylinder. Tap lightly on the key in different directions but not hard enough to break the key.
If that does not help, the key could need to be replaced or the cylinder needs to be looked at by a lock smith or replaced.

Ignition lock cylinders are pretty notorious for this. You may get the thing to turn by wiggling the key up and down while turning at the same time. I have also had luck in tapping on the cylinder with a screwdriver handle while turning the key. To completely fix the problem, you will have to replace the lock cylinder. GM (AC Delco) lock cylinder kits come with an assortment of tumblers so the new cylinder can be set-up to work with your existing keys.
Fixed one the other day. The key was wearing down. Had dealer cut another key off vin number. Fixed problem. Lubricate the key hole also as dirt and grime can cause problems to.

disconnect the battery and pull the air bag fuse out to diable the air bag. Remove the steering coulmb trim covers and expose the lock cylinder. disconnect the neg battery cable. remove the plastics around the steering column, this may entail removal of neighboring plastic components. there should be a small hole or pin on the bottom (or top) side of the key cylinder housing, with key in acc position use a small punch/screwdriver, nail etc to release the key cylinder lock, remove cylinder. reverse the steps for replacement.
