Honda HR21 lawnmower would start and run for about 5 seconds, then die. Pulled tank, carb, air filter and plug. Cleaned everything thoroughly, re-gapped plug and filled with fresh gas. Motor has good compression. Now it starts and runs great on low, medium, and high throttle settings. After warming the motor up for aprox 5 minutes, I try to engage the blade clutch (motor on high, and it kills the motor, every time. If I over rev the motor manually (past the governor setting), the blade will start and seem to operate normally but when I let the motor fall back down to the "normal" full throttle rpm setting, the motor dies. It's as though the motor needs to run faster than full throttle (on the governor) for it to start the blade and keep it going. Thank you in advance for your reply.

18.5 briggs intek vtwin only runs choke on only

Make sure the fuel jet is clean. Its easy to miss when cleaning the carb. Ive seen a lot of dirty fuel jets that once I clean them out run like new after.

Why does it stall out when given throttle, tail pipe backfires, and strong smell of gas.

Carbs running rich.. choke still on (jammed)
The carbs likely need a rebuild or a good cleaning.. try running SEAFOAM through the fuel system for a few tanks

Why does my 2005 dyna super glide not idle

Running fuel/air too lean or maybe bad spark plug or wire. Just make sure wires are tight. Might be fouled.

Sounds like the carb needs to be rebuilt. Those tiny jets will clog easily and need to be replaced. The diaphragm is also a large part of bogging and dieing. Hope this helps.
