I think my problems lay in the size of my air filter .can anybody help me please
Hi this is an older bike i am assuming everything is stock. since it run better with the intake is partially blocked i would check for an intake leak at the carb joints / manifolds second dirty carbs.
intake leak check (WD40 with he motorcycle running at idle spray around the manifolds if the rpms change you have a intake leak replace gaskets or o-rings.
Actually i would perform all of the above clean carbs and servive the carb joints especially if they have dried out and hard.
have you tried the obvious route of a restricted air flow or even might have a restrictor fitted to it or is it just started doing this

when you put on a new air filter you have to rejet the carb in order for the air/fuel mixture to be correct, because with a aftermarket air filter it is allowing more air in than before and not enough fuel. as the piston speeds up upon exceleration the air is not getting burnt off into exhaust because you do not have enough fuel in the mix

You have a vacumm hose loose look for small hose no connecter to anything - should solve it - I had a similar problem with a ZX9r the other day - same would run fine on choke not idle or start without it
Good Luck

Usually related to TORS, specifically the safety switch in the clutch/park brake assembly. If it's defective the engine won't rev. Solution: look for a TORS removal kit.

the problem with the rubber was close but on the gs450 there is a metal insert that even if the rubber was rotted away the metal seals aginst the head so it cant leak. the problem is on the gs 450 suzuki used a cheap throttle cable that kinks behind the gas tank and kinks at the bend to the crabs under the set and the throttle system is a pull only not a dual cable pull push to always close the throttle. if you start the bike a wiggle the bend in the cable that comes out from the twist grip you will see it changes the idle. with either your finger or a screw driver and push the plate down on the carbs that the cable connects too. if the idle drops this conforms your problem. order a new cable from dennis kirk they have the revised one that has metal adjustment screw and metal clip in. better jacket casing as well.
