Shifting hard 2005 flht

I recently changed my primary fluid at 10,000 miles. shortly after it's been getting harder to shift. i put one qt of drag specialty in it. i pulled the derby cover of and the smaller cover off too. i can't see the fluid looking into the derby hole due to the inner parts look to be lower than normal and close to the front blocking my view. i can see thru the smaller cover and the fluid comes about 1/2" from the bottom lip while standing the bike straight up and level. i've had 2 other bikes the same exact yr and bike. seems like i could see into the derby hole better to ck the fluid. what can you tell me ? my email is [email protected] thank you !

Sounds like the coil. Had the same problem with a Sportster, changed coil. As coil ages it breaks down, heat expands internal connections and coil fails. When cooled, coil contracts and the contacts come back together. This COULD be your problem, not sure. Do you have a buddy that will let you try his coil for a test?

SOURCE: how do I check the fluid level in a 2007 harley 883 custom

No ... The primary has its own fluid system. U check the level by removing the derby cover with the bike level and filling the primary with chain case fluid til it comes to the bottom edge of the diaphragm spring. U can see it with a flashlight

SOURCE: 2003 hd roadking the front brakes will not release

non return type blockage in the brake master cylinder. Requires stripping the master and replacing valve. A big bleed may help to clear the fault. Fluid is leaving the reservoir and unable to return. Fluid only flowing one way. See your dealer if you are not confident in re-building the master cylinder.

You've got the right idea. You need to pull the primary cover and take a look at the shifter pawl. As long as all external shifter parts are moving as they should, the problem is probably in the shifting mechanism inside the primary. You may have to pull the clutch assembly off to get to it.

Could be the throwout bearing is worn out. Are you backing off the cable adjustments all the way before trying to adjust the clutch? 62K is not a lot of miles on a clutch, but I don't know the type rider you are.

Try this----back off the cable adjustments all the way, then unlock the nut inside the derby cover and try the adjuster. It should run in then get tension. If not, look at throwout bearing first, before the complete clutch.

You do not adjust clutch cables, you only have one and you need about 1/8 inch freeplay at the clutch lever/ perch. You need to adjust the clutch inside the primary cover. If you have fluid more than just touching the bottom of the clutch diaphragm spring you can also have a dragging clutch.

I RECENTLY CHANGE MY TRASMISSION FLUID AND NOW MY TRASMISSION DO NOT ENGAGE AFTER 60 MILES AND MY RPM KEEP GOING HIGHER

Did you change the filter and the 5 qts of fluid or have the whole system purged with 13 qts and no filter? Did you use the right fluid? Did you check the fluid after driving the car a few miles? How was it running before the change? It is possibly coincidence that the tranny is not shifting, The fluid change would not cause that unless you didn't put in enough fluid or you put in the wrong stuff. The first sign of low fluid is not shifting, check it out, hope this helps.

The thick oil has probably not harmed anything. It will make it harder to shift because it gets into the clutch pack and acts like a hydraulic fluid in a torque converter. I'm betting that now that you've changed the oil to Syn3 that it'll shift better. Just make sure you don't overfill the primary. With the bike standing straight up, remove the derby cover. The oil level should be no higher than the lowest point on the clutch spring. If you look at the clutch assembly, you'll see that there is an aluminum ring around the outside of the clutch with a darker colored disc in the center. The dark disc is the clutch spring. Fill the primary just up to the lowest point on the dark disc just over the bright ring.

If this does not improve the shifting into second gear, have the dealership adjust the shifter pawl adjustment. It takes some special tools to get to the adjustment.

Yes I think you are. Try Firestone or Midas. Firestone changes out ALL of the fluid and not just 25%. 167K miles may be a lot to some people but it is not to a car taken good care of. Remember Cadillac is top of the line for USA vehicles and has higher tolerances.
