To sync the carbs on a bike that has four carbs on it and only three screws.
SOURCE: 1977 750gs carb sync
carb sync is done using only the carb hard stop adjustment u don't touch the air fuel mixture screw, had this exact same bike had the serive manual am dead sure on this
SOURCE: Cleaning Carb Jets
not to a trained ear also go by rpm and spark plug color
NOTE: use copper wire to clean jets, sync is just thottles are same position as all carb's just leave them adjustments alone will be fine if are out use a 1/8 drill an place in between piston/butterfly to carb bore to sync/calibrate
better use a manometer for adjusting screws
depends on condition of org parts
worn = richer running
new = lean an clean
also if changed the exhaust system need to
re-calibrate carbs for max performance

Sounds like you were adjusting the idle mix screw on the carburetor. I think www.bikebandit.com has OEM parts, with diagrams. Also, there are many forums for different motorcycles and their owners on the internet, I would try a Google search for the right forum for your bike. Good Luck!
SOURCE: Hi my honda cbr 600 fl 1991 the bike pulls great
im not sure if this model has a fuel pump but follow your fuel line and see if it does wen u find it remove black plastic cap and check the points contact breakers are in good conditon ie not worn uneven or worn out and that they open and close.check your air filter spark plugs and your carbs could have a blocked jet so get them cleaned and balanced.

There is a small knurled knob to the rear base at centre of carbies, this turns a worm screw, actuating a bar for all 4 carbs. The site below provides an exploded view and name of carby parts.
Here's a tip...if the knurled knob (designed to turn by hand) is too hard to turn, a multi facet (not hexagon facet) socket or ring spanner is far easier than pliers or grippers.
Cheers.

No, the answer does not help me to adjust the carbs, you only answered the question why.
