I have a 1993 CBR 1000 with about 60,000 miles on it.
In the last 6 months, it has become harder and harder to start when the motor is cold. Battery and starter seem ok. Once it starts, it runs good.
Since this started happening my gas mileage has gotten worse as time goes by. Now it does't want to start at all. It cranks like it wants to start, but doesn't. I can smell gas from pumping the throttle so much.
What you suggest has already been checked and all was well. I even had him go thru the carbs. I am thinking that it might be the spark box behind rear cowel, but I do not know how to check it. I have checked all the leads going into the spark box and it all tested ok with a multi meter tester. Now realize that this problem started little by little and then progressed to this.

The spark plugs have already been replaced with medium heat range plugs. At first, I thought that might be the problem, but it wasn't.

Need to start w/ a tune -up and diagnostic to start eliminating potential causes. 1st take off tank, & remove plugs and do compression test. should have 149-206 psi in each cylinder, have throttle wide open as you crank motor for test.next take valve cover off and check valve tappet clearance,intakes .003"-.005",exhausts.006-.008,adjust as needed by reshimming to specs.reinstall valve cover w/ new gasket.replace spark plugs w/ new ngk dpr9ea-9 plugs w/ gap set at .031"-.035" next check air cleaner & box clean or replace as necessary. make sure fuel is fresh and that you have fuel to all carbs by opening fuel drain screw at bottom of bowls to check for fuel in bowls.make sure all spark plugs are firing also by connecting to cap & cranking motor as you hold plug to ground on motor or frame, one at atime, to avoid potentially harming cdi box always have plug grounded to bike when cranking motor. if all this checks out ok or is brought back to specs.,and still running bad or wont start, carb. set should be taken off & inspected,cleaned,repaired as needed, reinstalled on bike, and synchronized w/ vacuum guage set.
You can choose between 3 types the normal the cold and the hot (performance) sparkplugs. The normal for medium temperatures is the best, the cold is suited for bellow 5º C temps. And the hot is for hot weather and performance usage.

bike is 18yrs--plugs last long as theyr not fouled or oxidized--the cables probly worn inside or maybe ign module and coil--cud be just bad connect--get a haynes or clymer book and start inspectin
sir,there are 2 reason
1. please check bolts of small fuse connecter near the battery ,sometimes it get loose ,ectually that is main positive connecter to battery
2.please replug the rectifier-regulater cuplers ,otherwise you need to replace the regulater
Change gearbox oil every 3000 miles. Change oil filter every 6000 miles. Use 10w40 motor oil. NEVER use synthetic lubricants as they can mess up the clutch.
Oil the chain every two weeks. Lube the control cables every oil filter change.
Keep the gas tank full in the cold months. This lessens internal tank rusting due to condensation in the tank. Drain the carbs when the bike will sit over the winter unless you plan on starting the bike every two weeks and letting it run for 15 minutes each time.
Be sure the gas valve is turned off when the bike is not in use.
Get a 2 amp trickle charger and charge the battery once a week for 4 hours in the winter. Be sure to keep enough water in the battery to cover the top of the plates in each cell. Know that batteries only last two years or so.
Check the chain tension once a month during the summer riding season.
batteries do lose charge if connected and not running for a while. when in storage you should disconnect the battery. specially if the storage area isn't heated.
I think I would change the petrol in the tank as it may have become a bit stale. Also I would replace the battery.Make certain the replacement battery in fully charged before you try again.
What new parts were fitted? Were there the same issues before the parts were fitted? There may be a compression isssue due to a poorly fitted part. This will become evident as the bike becomes warm and parts start to expand with heat.
I've got a 1995 cbr600 and it had the samr problem- it's a well known fault with hondas- it's probably the cam chain tensioner. It works off oil pressure so sounds like a tin full of marbles until the bike warms up. The best solution, if you can't live with the noise is a manual cam chain tensioner. APE make them and it stopped the noise on my bike as soon as it was fitted. I'm not sure if you can get one for your bike but a little googleing should tell you.
