I have a vauxhall astra merit 1997 when i take the oil cap off there is a thick brown sludge on the cap and a bit in the oil tank
Sounds like head gaskit gone or cracked block try there is liquid go car shop and as gaskit sealer you put it in rad could work out cheaper the a new head done .
That is water in the oil. could be old oil or gasket on head has gone check to see if there is a oily residue in the water container. if not do an oil change and check the torque on the head bolts and re tighten them. there is some stuff you can buy that repairs seal in the engine. something like stop leak. don't use thin oil. engine is old now and well warn in, 30/50 or 20/40 will do fine. but dont use 10 or 15. oil as it is to thin

You have a Blown Head Gasket, Cracked Cylinder wall, Cracked Head or the Timing chain has worn a hole in one of the water channels that goes through that front cover. Your not going to know for sure till you open the motor up and get into it. Do a compression check on the cylinders. If you find water in a cylinder or high compression compared to the cylinders on each side of it then you have a cracked cylinder wall or Head.

rad/cooling system not serviced.dex cool will sludge up.entire ststem needs to be flushed
adding regular anti freeze to a dexcool system will also do this
SOURCE: i have a thick dark brown sludge in my antifreez resevoir tank is it oil or really old antifreeze?
Usually antifreeze and oil mixing causes a dark whiteish milkshake consistancy liquid so if its a dark color i'd guess its REALLY old antifreeze with a lot of corrosion from your engine. Get it flushed and changed a.s.a.p. and hope it didnt mess it up to bad.
