A low Universal Pump can be used! It must not exceed 3.0 PSI! I have used the ones from NAPA that are a 2.5 PSI Low Universal Fuel Pump! It will fill the float bowls up and then stop pumping. Your float needles have to be Good and working properly and float level set right at factory Specs. Any pump over 3.0 PSI will NOT Work as they will overfille the carbs and flood engine. Good float needles and seats can hold up to 3.25 PSI Fuel Pressure but anything over that will push them open and overfill the float bowl chambers which will flood the engine cylinders with Way To much Fuel! Hope that helps! Rick

The problem would be if the stock pump is an "on demand" type pump that turns itself on and off depending on pressure demands. (like XV1000 and XV1100)
That is why stock fuel pumps are so expensive. They do more than just pump fuel,. the regulate it as well

A universal pump would pump fuel all the time, over fueling the bike.

Hi.
We just fixed our Virago fuel pump, we used an electric pump from Autozone, $50 and it works just great. The part # is E8016S it's a 2.5 - 4 psi pump. it's a little larger than the regular pump so you need to munt it under the seat. I moved the fuse box and munted it near there, you have to watch you dont kink the fuel lines and you may need to shorten the fuel line to the carbs, but it does work just fine. I took the bike out yesterday, i did 50mls and had it up to 100mph with no problems.
