1983 GS650 Temptor - Oil leaking from left side engine cover

I'm helping out a friend and have no experience on this bike but am technically experienced on my own bikes. I can see the oil leaking from the side cover - looks like a gasket should do the trick. The bolts are tight.

Is there anything unusual about pulling and re-installing this cover? Just want to make sure I'm aware of any surprises before opening it up.

Tom

If it's the valve cover, or covers it's an easy straight forward job.  I suggest you have the new parts first

How do you check the oil level on a 1983 Honda V45

Center stand your motorcycle. If you have an Interceptor have a friend hold the bike upright. Unscrew the dipstick on the back of the right engine cover. Part #4. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1983-honda-vf750c-magna/o/m11968#sch558483 Wipe off the dip stick and place it back into the opening but do not screw it in. Pull the dip stick out and make sure the oil level is between the high and low mark. If the level is low add only JASO MA certified motorcycle oil designed to work in engines with transmission gears and wet clutches.

I need to know where the stater is, and how to change it myself on my 1983 gr650 tempter

Your stator is bolted into the left engine cover , You will need a stator and a gasket. Simply drain your oil into a clean container so it can be put back in later, unplug the stator from the harness behind the side cover, unbolt the left side cover of the engine, gently tap on it and pull it off, the stator in in the cover and can now be unbolted and replaced. If your bike battery slowly loses it's charge over a weks time , you may have a weak magnet on the flywheel. Very hard to diagnose, all you can do is replace the fly wheel if the new stator does not fix a slow discharge problem.

I have an 883R converted to a 1200 w/Andrews Cams and a Mukini Carb. Since the conversion the top end leaked oil which a friend changed the gaskets on. However, since he changed the gaskets, the...

I'm going to guess at this one since I can't hear it. I'm going to guess a blown head gasket. People describe the noise in different ways. Some say it sounds like a squeak and I think it sounds like a whistle. Let the bike sit overnight and get stone cold. Before you try to start the bike, pull the spark plug wires off the plugs but leave the plugs in the heads. Open the throttle wide open but leave the enricher off. Turn on the ignition and press the starter button. Is the noise louder when you do this or is it louder when the engine is warm. If it's a head gasket, it should be louder when the engine is cold.

The only thing on the upper left side of the engine is the rocker arms and valve springs. There is a possibility that your friend got the center portion of the rocker box cover just a bit too close to one of the valve springs and it's hitting the center cover. Take a screwdriver and use it like a stethoscope and see if you can locate the noise. Feel the "alignment" of the lower, center, and upper rocker box covers. If the center and top cover are not in their proper position, this could be the problem.

Good Luck

How much oil does my bike hold it is a 83 suzuki gs750es.

as far as a exact amount i'm not sure, there is a oil glass on the right hand side engine cover near or on the clutch cover. there will be two lines right next to the top is full the bottom is the fill, after you drain the oil and fill, start the bike for a few sec to let the oil fill the filter after shutting the bike off let it sit before topping off this will let the oil run back to the pan so you dont over fill it. next to the fill plug on the bike for the oil there is most likely a set of numbers read something like this 2100cm 3, that is 2100 cc of oil you can get a ratio rite at any local bike shop. you can pick a service manual and get all final numbers.
Good luck my friend

I left the bike idling for an hour it got super hot now the oil is leaking badly

Friend, An hour is a very long time. And since you say it got super hot. It has damaged the gasket, which needs to be changed. The gasket got burnt partially and has started leaking. PLEASE DO NOT RUN IT UNTIL YOU HAVE REPLACED THE GASKET. I hope you know what a gasket is? It is the soft packing between the cover and the body of the engine and helps seal the opening so that the oil or whatever it is does not leak. Please replace the gasket immediately before starting the bike.

Where is the slave cylinder located at on this bike

It is behind the engine cover on the left side of the bike.
Remove left driver foot peg or floorboard and shifter and the case is a few bolts to get off. No oil will leak when cover is removed.

Wheres the oil filter on a 1983 Honda XR200R? and how do you clean it?

A 1983 XR200R does not have a replaceable oil filter. It has a cleanable screen. It is located on the left side of the crankcase behind a large nut. I think it is a 17mm. Remove cover and clean screen.

How do i check my oil in my 1983 Suzuki Tempter Motorcycle ?

There is a sight window for viewing your oil level on the right side engine crankcase cover. It is in the lower left corner of the cover as you look at the engine from the side. With the bike sitting upright, the oil level should be visible in the window. You want to be able to see oil and free space both in the window. If you don't see oil, you will need to add some. If you don't see free space, use a friend to lean the bike away from the window and see how far past vertical he has to lean it in order to be able to see the level. If it has to be leaned quite a bit off of vertical, you should drain the oil and refill it with the proper quantity.
