These regulator get very hot by nature - so difficult to assess whether this is normal behaviour or not.
Start by measurng the voltage to the battery with engine running, to determine if there is a failure of the charging system.
The Rectrifier stage may indeed be shorted, which is causing the wires to overheat. Poor connections at the connector plug can also cause this however.

I have a system in my12Volt car drawing only 18amp, but the wirings to the system are getting so hot, I have to fit a resister online.
The resister is also hot, and with the resister fitted I have lost at 50% of voltage.
What is best unit I can fit online to dissipate the heat from wiring and still maintain voltage.

Voltage regulator on Audigy 2Zs Platinum Pro board is getting hot really quick. I replaced the old one with one from radioshack. Not exactly the correct match for the original but the device worked only for a short period of time before the regulator started getting hot again. I guess this means that I have something further down the line to inspect but don't really know what i'm doing. The only reason I replaced the regulator was because it looked fried. I'm going to order an original replacement and see what happens but any advice would be great.
just off the top of my head... could be
A)-bad regulator
or
B)-short in wiring
or
C)-aftermarket accessories pulling too many amps.
any more info to narrow it down?
