I purchased a new gas tank for my '82 yamaha vision 550. the replacement tank is from an '83 and there seems to be 3 inlets on the '83 tank(fuel or vaccum) and 2 on the '82 tank i'm replacing. Just wondering what can be done here?

  • jjjakins Apr 19, 2009

No i thought of that but the bored holes are different distances apart from the one tank to the other. Was hoping one inlet on the petcock was a vaccum that could be blocked off and not needed on the '82?

The 83 has a fuel return line intended to prevent vapor lock , by circulating cooler gas through he fuel pump. You can cap off the fuel return hose and it will cause no problems. The carbs on the 82 differ quite a bit from the 83 and the petcocks are not interchangeable, with out a lot of work.

Can you swap the petcock from one tank to the other?

  • Anonymous Apr 20, 2009

i would hook it up the same way the old one was and leave the extra outlet alone and see what happens when you start it up. put your finger over the hole and see if it is drawing vacum. sometime the extra hole is not used.

I'm looking for a gas tank for my 1982 Yamaha Vision 550. Any idea where to find one? I'm really having a hard time finding one that doesn't leak. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Three possibilities:
  1. Google “ motorcycle salvage yamaha “. See what you can find there.
  2. Go to the site below where you may be able to find and see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
  3. Fix a leaking tank the easy way. Google “ kreem liquid fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
Can I get a “very helpful” rating on this answer? And it doesn’t cost anything extra!
