The light means your battery is not being charged and the chances are its also very low on charge so may not turnover the engine for starting, the light should go out as soon as the engine starts if your alternator is working properly. battery light on because of one of these things. the battery needs replacing because its become very difficult for the circuits to charge it(dead cells eg more than 5yrs old). Your Alternator is not outputting charge to the battery( because belt has broken, or because alternator brushes are worn or because its just broken or one of the wires has broken or is loose.). use a voltmeter to check battery voltage is around 13 volts. just after starting an alternator will change the battery voltage to around 14.5 volts if the alternator is ok and after warming up should stay around 14 volts.
check battery volts with engine off if battery volts on 12v battery ok... check battery running over 12v then battery is charging, stays on 12v battery is not charging ... replace alt. or gen which ever one you have... battery volts drops as running battery needs to be charged or replaced.
Starting with the battery light, the warning light means the alternator is not charging the battery. It could be a faulty alternator, or a problem with the wiring between the battery and the alternator. Normally you can drive a vehicle for several miles on the battery alone. If you have charged the battery and it checks out ok, you would need to check the wiring from the battery to the alternator and to the fuse box for problems.
If your battery charge light is on and your car is dying after u have already have it running u need a new alternator. If it stays running after started but it will not start again unless jumped you need a new battery.
start with the battery. needs at least 11 or 12 volts to start the car. By no lights, do you mean nothing, absolutely nothing comes on? no lights on dash when you turn key to on? If so, need to check battery connections. are they both tight and clean? Is battery fully charged? Before you can diagnose the car you musthave a good battery that is fully charged. Then you can try and start it. If it still wont start or crank over you may have a main fuse out that would be under hood near battery.
usually caused by failed generator. Fix the generator and other lights will also extinguish. The car should jump start, but will not stay running without a charged battery. Recommend removing the generator and take to parts store for testing. Would you like instructions for removing generator?
The alternator is not charging, need to replace it,and charge the battery up with a slow charge,,,2 amp, over night a then some, slow charging gets the charge all the way up,and creates a deep charge that will stay, and prolong the battery life.
Nissan truns the brake and battery light on when there is a charging issue. When you say it wont start does that means it craks or no? If it does not crank I would attempt to charge the battery then try to start it and check the charging system.
