Sounds like the starter clutch may have gone bad. The outer primary cover will have to come off if the clutch went out on you. The job is much is easier if the oil tank is also removed.

SOURCE: 1999 ttr 250 starter motor is not engaging

I would guess it is the starer clutch, also called the one way clutch. I went on to www.bikebandit.com and looked up your bike and it has a nice exploded veiw of your starter clutch . I will try to put a direct link to it , hopefully it will take you to it. http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/yamaha-motorcycle-tt250rl-1999/o/m7707
if not go put in your bike and look under starter clutch.

SOURCE: harley davidson dyna, when hitting the starter

Just had a similar issue with my '03 Dyna. Relay would click but not a peep out of the starter. It ended up being the ground(?) wire that plugs into the outside of the solenoid. The little plastic clip was worn out and causing it to lose connection intermittently. Replaced and back to normal. Let's ride!

Starter stay on without pushing button

It sounds as if the starter solenoid is stuck or siezed keeping the starter's gear in contact with the flywheel. The starter solenoid needs to be repaired soon or the starer motor will be damaged.

Starter motor solenoid wont engage

There is condenser shaped part attched to the starter moter this is the part which makes the starter moter to spin and when it is stuck the moter does not spin you can check it by one person sitting in the car holding the key to start position and another one hit it softly with some spanner or something The starter moter will move there is a small gear in it which requires replace ment Or the other possible reason can be the carbon brushes in the starter moter are worn out or the place where these brushes touch on armature the place is worn out that Y ou will only come to know when you will take the moter away from the engine Lastly I hope you might have checked your battery that it is giving sufficient current to the moter

2002 Harley softtail starts spins but no start

If the starter spins but the engine does not turn over, the "overrunning clutch" inside your starter is bad and needs to be replaced. If you can do the job yourself, it would save you a lot of money to replace the clutch. If you are going to have to pay someone to repair the bike, it would be less expensive to simply replace the entire starter. Labor cost being what they are.

Now, if the engine turns over but won't start, you probably don't have a spark. This could be an electrical problem with the bike or it could be a problem caused by the security system if you have on.

Good Luck

Starter turning motor over very slowly starter stalls after about half revolution. batt. load test, all connections good.

do a draw test on the starter hook a voltmeter to your batt and hit the starter button if it drops to2or3 volts then comes back up when button is released you need a starter it should only drop to about 6 volts under load

1994 harley softtail custom just bought it!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think its whats called the commutator which is the contacts inside of the solenoid on the starter and they need to be cleaned. I've hung around a shop for years and have seen it a million times. Cant guarantee thats the problem but its a good place to start with the sounds of the problem.
