Check if its getting fuel and air, you need All 3 to make it run, if you have all of that (and going on the its firing concept) all that need to happen is fuel goes to carb, intake turns it to vapor, spark plug fires and ignites the fuel vapor and that causes the piston to go, so if its firing and all the above are good you should check the points and condensor, it should turn over for a few seconds and backfire if its not backfiring its likely not getting fuel, try to spray some ether(quik start or just some gas directly into the carb to see if anything hapens, You may need to take it to a shop or have friend with some mechanical background help ya. good luck Rotticus,
p.s. in the future be more specific and we can try to get more details for you, also google the bikes make and model and you should find some schimatics.

My turn signals don't work on my 1981 Yamaha XJ

I've used www.tradebit.com. It's not free, but extremely reasonable. I've gotten them as cheap as $4.99, and the most I've spent is $20. They have tons of manuals, worht a look to see if your's is available.Good luck!

My yamaha xj 550 wont start

Headlamp should go out when starting,to provide more power for starting. Is the fuel making it to the engine?Trash or water in fuel system can cause it to behave this way.Clean air filter and check (test)those fuses,You should get some fuel out of the fuel system if you open the drain on the carb, catch it in a container so you can inspect it for a problem.if you dont get any thats likely to be why it doesn't start.

Starter removal 1981 yamaha 550

2 bolt usually hold the starter in place. after you remove the starter wire lead then remove the 2 bolts that are on the end of the started(they point down) after those are removed the starter can be slid out sideway to the right. sometimes lightly tapping with a small piece of wood and a hammer helps
