It sounds a bit like dirty oil. The only other thing would be a slightly bent shift fork. It's about time for an oil change anyway so change the oil and see if that takes care of the problem after a couple of hours riding. It sounds a bit like dirty oil. I will answer this as if it is a manual gear box as the solution will be different for an automatic.
First gear has a syncro ring energise spring that when pushed against the syncro cone in the gear spins the gear to the relevant shaft speed so that engagement is smooth. Because of the vast difference of the shaft speeds when engaging 1st gear the energising doesn't get a chance to work and so the gears refuse to mesh. To possible ways to get around this is to keep the road speed low say around 10mph or less or increase the engine rpm up to around 3500-4000rpm before trying to engage 1st gear. Basically the syncro is for engaging the gear as you are coming to a stop or going very slow . Check the drain plug magnet for metal as the clutch shaft bearing may be moving forward and preventing the engagement properly.
First of all... the FJR has a hydraulic clutch so there is no cable to adjust. Secondly don't listen to any of these people telling you to tear into the case. The FJR has an adjustable clutch lever. Setting 5 is closest to the grip (less throw) setting 1 is furthest away (more throw). See where yours is set and adjust accordingly
Try to check the trans mission gears of your 1995 jeep grand cherokee. The shift fork and the clutch sleeve of the trans mission is locking to the other gears .And then also check the starter motor and its solenoid.if the starter motor solenoid is destroyed or worn out replace .
Your bike has a fifth gear. The problem is probably a bent shift fork. Broken engagement dogs could be present but I have never seen that happen in anything other than 1st and second gear. This is approximately an $800 to $1000.00 repair. Personally, I really like only having to shift 4 gears. Don't you?
Below is a partial image of your trannie and also a generic image showing how a slider gear moves left and right when pushed by a shift fork. In this example the gear dogs engage into either 1st gear or 2nd gear depending on which way the fork moves the slider gear. If the fork were bent, the slider may go into second gear but not have enough movement to reach first gear. If the gear dogs were broken off then the gear has no way to engage.
I don't get paid for my answers but I do take pride in them, I just try to help where I can. So if you feel it is right,> > A “very helpful” rating for this answer? Thanks!
i had a nissan pickup that would whine in all gears except 4th...it started out with 1st then reverse then went to the rest...solution was new transmission...or rebuild cause the syncronizers or the gears them selves are being chewed up...the new transmission was cheaper then a rebuild. or take it to somewhere that will do free diag on the transmission.
Often the transmission will clunk when first starting up and shifting
into 1st. gear. To help alleviate this, hold the clutch lever in for
thirty seconds or so before making that first shift into gear. This should make shifting into first much quieter. This situation occurs on most of the FJRs, even when new.
last year on service with mot only 1800 miles ridden since service

When was the last oil and oil filter change?
