SOURCE: suzuki gs550l flot height

You may have already done this. I'm assuming you have the original BS32SS Mikuni constant velocity (CV) carbs. They were used on 80-82 models. With the fuel bowl and float chamber gasket off, set floats to 21.4 - 23.4 mm (0.84-0.92 in.) If the float chamber gasket is still on the carb, reduce the measurement by approximately 1mm. As a side note, I went to an auto parts store to buy a gauge to set mine - they didn't sell them individually. Parts man told me to walk across the street to a car repair shop that had bought several carb kits from him. Each carb kit has the L-shaped gauge with it. I checked with repair shop and they gave me one for free. For simplicity's sake, I set mine to 22 mm (without the gasket in place) on all 4 carbs. Hope this helps someone.

Does the 1983 suzuki gs550L have an oil filter

Yes , there is a cartridge style oil filter under a round cover in the front of the machine. There are three dome nuts with sealing washers that hold the cover on. The spring goes against the front cover to push the filter into the motor. Be sure to replace the o-ring on the cover so you do not create new leaks.

Proper start-up service for a 1980 Suzuki GS550L motorcycle.

Shoot WD40 into each cylinder to get them wet.
Change gearbox oil and oil filter. Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. How bad is the rust inside the gas tank? I would consider a liquid tank liner if rusted. Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
  • Lube chain or get a new chain (if needed)
  • Lube Throttle, clutch and front brake cables
  • Lube Speedometer cable
  • Grease the swingarm, axle and steering stem bearings.
  • Install a new battery
  • Clean, and balance the carbs. This will be the problem area. They will likely be gummed up pretty good. Be sure to install an in-line fuel filter before starting the bike.

Oil & filter change myself

First drain all the oil, "it's better to work with a slightly warmer engin so that the oil can easely drain.

On one side of the motor there will be a rondish cover with usualy 3 screws in " watch out for the orings" Take of the cover.

Take out the filter, * Be carefull for any springs and remember the way that you took it out*
Replace the filter with a new one from a dealer, " the best plase to get it"

Putting everything back in the reverse order.
Hope it helps
