I have a 1975 Yamaha DT250 that I am fixing up and today after a ride I noticed oil on the head fins that looked like it came from the exhaust pipe, what could this be?
I am not personally familiar with a 1975 DT250, but here is a general overview. If the bike is a 4 stroke, the oil you observed could have been from the exhaust, however it is more likely that it is from a leaky valve cover gasket or a head gasket. If the bike is a 2 stroke, the "oil" is from the exhaust (expansion chamber). It is excess 2 stroke oil that accumulates. You should reduce the mix to 32:1 or even 40:1 and replace the oring gasket in the opening of the pipe. If in a pinch you can use high temp silicone, but not a good way to go.
best wishes!
Make sure you check to see if the exhaust pipe gasket is there. Without it, there will show an oil leak

Thanks guys for your info, let me clarify, my bike is a 2 cycle with an oil injector system and the oil seems to be coming out from where the pipe meets the head.
was the leak coming from where the pipe joines the head or where it connects to the silencer
