I have a 2002 Yamaha Vstar Classic with starter problems but a good battery yet a sluggish starter. The engine light sometimes comes on and the starter struggles to enage and turn the engine over. Other times when she's warmed up, it turns over in a heartbeat.
I have read that there are problems with these starters and noticed mine has developed a slight twist (bolts offstet).
Can I pull the starter with out changing/draining the old and re-align the bolts??
Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem, replaced the starter ($80 aftermarket, $800 OEM) and have not had this problem again and I just turned 100,000 mile on my 2001 VStar 1100 Classic!

Twisted bolts on the starter are never a good thing. There is also a one-way starter clutch on the crank behind the flywheel that can be damaged. If it engages intermittently, it's on its way out. Both the starter and starter clutch are prone to failure on VStars... and neither are cheap to fix. Hopefully your bike is still under warranty.

I replaced the battery - definitely more kick to turn the bike over, but it still does not engage the starter fully and smoothly every time.
Almost like its ratcheting between fully engaged and disengaged.
Before I buy a new starter, I will try to pull the old one, inspect it, clean it and test it to see if it's an intermittent thing.
Is the solenoid inside of the starter?? Is it replaceable?
Or is my best bet - purchasing a rebuilt unit and go from there?

No warranty on my older Vstar. I re-alaigned & tightened the starter bolts and it seemed to help the intermittent starts temporarily. That lasted about a week or so. Now the odd time, I hear the starter engage but does not turn the engine over and the yellow check engine light comes on. Not sure if my starter is jambing or not getting enough power to turn over. New battery with plenty of juice. All connections good.
I thought the starter clutch failing is accompanied by a spinning starter and no turn over because the gears are not engaging.
Any additional tips are appreciated before I send it to the shop.

It could be the solenoid inside the starter - it me have worn. Is it making a different noise to normal operation?
