Fouled Fuel System on 2005 Yamaha V-Star 1100 Classic

The other night I was riding home when the bike kind of started running rough, right at about 150 miles on the trip counter. I usually just switch to the reserve and it goes no problem and fill up soon after, but this time that did not work. The bike will start with the choke on and run kind of rough, but once I try yo hit the throttle or turn the choke of it dies. I pulled the fuel line from the tank and there is plenty of fuel flow, so I am assuming the carb, filter, or strainer is clogged or fouled. Is this the problem or could there be another cause?

Thanks in advance.

So it would just be the fuel filter clogged or fouled?

Put a new filter on it

  • Anonymous May 28, 2009

yes when your tank get's low any trash or debris get's sucked through the line and into the filter. the petcock may have a screen in it also so when you change the filter clean the screen in the petcock too.

Bike starts right up when choke is on or off. as soon as i giveit gas it stalls out and dies. i just put fresh gas in it. also, it only has about 3,000 miles on it. it's a yamaha v star 2006 1100...

There is a fuel setting issue and the mixture to the cylinder is not correct. It can be problems in the carburator, the air / fuel mixture settings, possible there is dirt clogging within any ports and choking.
When the throttle is raised there is insufficient fuel to the cylinder and so it shuts down. check the spark plug, the gaps and the timing.

My 2005 Yamaha v star 1100 classic had after market Cobra pipes on it when I bought it. I took it in to have it tuned up because of a lot of backfire while in operation. They said the carb kit was in...

I do not agree your bike should run better then it sounds like it is. Just throwing on a set of pipes and a carb kit is not always all that needs done. I ask about the air filter because it seems your motor is getting to much gas and not enough air. The thing I would do next is to get a higher flow of air on the intake side by going to a high flow air filter. A quick check to see if this will help is to temporarily remove the air filter and test ride the bike. If it runs better without the filter this tells you a high flow filter will help. Your bike may need more work than this to get it right on. The other thing you could have done is get someone to jet in the carb to cut down the fuel flow and get the fuel air ratio right on.

I Have a 2005 Yamaha V Star 650 Motorcycle-bike just stopped running (60 mph) , would not restart. Battery good, fuel full, spark at plug any idea's to troubleshoot?

Try tapping on your fuel pump with a plastic hammer with the ignition switched on. Or bypassing the fuel pump completely with a piece of fuel line. It sounds like you ran out of gas which is related to the fuel petcock position or a non-functioning fuel pump.

2002 Yamaha V-Star Classic 1100 Will not run over 70 MPH

Hi,
The first thing you need to check is the air filter. Sometimes critters can get into the airbox when a bike sits for awhile. Sounds crazy, but it has happened to me. If nothing is blocking the filter, give it a quick clean since you have it out.
Next things to check:
Faulty diaphragm
Improperly adjusted fuel level
Clogged or loose main jet
Faulty fuel pump
You may not be able to check these on your own, but these are the next likely culprits.
Hope this helped

Running very rough

This sounds like your fuel jets need to be cleaned,,,,the longer it sits the more varnish and film will build up! the timing may be off also
