Honda foreman 450 es starting problem

I have a 2000 450es that won't start. the battery appeared dead (and old) so i replaced it. it started a couple times and the battery died(or so i thought). the battery tested as fully charged but the dash would not light at all. so i figured alternator is dead. but when it did turnover a few times, it clicked loudly. so i figured starter/solenoid. but that would not explain the electrical problem. i can start it by using the pull start. any ideas on what is wrong?

Sounds like a bad battery. It can show 12 volts, but not have any amperage. It could be the solenoid, but the dash lights wouldn't be affected by a bad solenoid.

I have a 2003 Honda foreman 450 4x4. The 4 wheel drive light comes on and blinks 4 times. I've replaced the battery and fcc unit but problem still exists. Also no 4 wheel drive when light is blinking.

Not sure why but Honda in their infinite wisdom integrated the 4WD among other functions into the speedometer on a few years. If your speedometer doesn't work either chances are you need a new speedometer. At like $400! It is what happened to mine. If you start run the engine at all with a dead battery (hand start, jump etc.) it WILL fry the speedo, the 4WD the reverse bypass, etc. I learned the hard way.
