Black smoke from exhaust means engine getting to much gas.

well blue smoke is a sighn that you are burning oil either valve seal or rings are wore out or cound also be a leaky head gasket

Not good.

Black smoke can come from a number of problems. It could be a head gasket, it could be timing/fuel injectors, it could be a problem with piston rings. None of these are simple fixes, so the best thing to do is take it to a good mechanic. There are good lists by zip code on the cars dot com website if you look at the click and clack section, or you can go to the national public radio section to find click and clack. These are the guys that do the weekly radio show, but they have a website with recommendations for mechanics. You may also be able to get mechanic recommendations on this website.

You've done a lot of work. How does your EGR valve look Its the 'space ship' gizmo under the air cleaner. Remove and decoke is a quick job and it may just cure the lot
