I cranked up my 2012 Ultra, let it idle approx 1 hour, it got hot, oil pressure dropped, had a strong odor like oil burning, oil pressure was between 0 & 5, cut it off, checked the oil, everything good, except for that odor that resembles gears or oil burning... cranked it up 3 hrs later when it cooled down and it seems to run fine except for the odor. Can you tell me what may have happened?
An engine ,any engine , suffers at idle
there is low coolant circulation , low oil pressures , low charge rates and if it is left idling for any length of time ( more than 10 minutes ) early engine failure can be expected
besides wasting fuel for 60 minutes what is the point of letting it idle
yes the oil is burnt from the overheating and it will need a service now

if it is open loop ( O2 sensors) check the sensor condotion, connections etc.
Reload the files onto the Power Commander, insure they are the exact files for your ride, the wrong files can affect operation and gum up the O2 sensors.

Drain the fuel either by siphening or removing the cross over tube at the front of the tank and letting it drain that way or just block off those cross over lines and leave the fule in the tank for removal.
0) remove seat
1) drain fuel
2) undo cross over line (bottom front of gas tank.
3) shut off pet **** and remove fuel line from pet ****.
4)there should only be 2 bolts holding the tank on, one at the top front of the tank and one at the back of the tank.
All in all a pretty easy (but possibloy messy) job.

Turn the Bike on and the Radio off and then follow the buttons on the screen. Most people think you have to do it while it is running and this does not work

The 09 models come with a "parade" mode which causes the rear cyclinder to quit firing when idling in traffic etc to combat over heating. You should be able to kick it on by rolling the throttle grip FORWARD for 5 to 10 seconds. Have you changed the pipes or air filter? If you have and never had the EFI adjusted (either factory download or fuel tuner installed) your bike could be running extra rich causing the over heating and eventual engine destruction. New Harleys run rich from the factory, any changes to the intake/exhaust system without proper fuel injection management will cause overheating. Try getting your bike into parade mode by rolling the throttle forward to the stops for a few seconds, that will cool things down.
SOURCE: High Idle On Start-up.
Most fuel injected motorcycles do start up in a "fast idle" mode. Although I don't know much about fuel injection on Harleys (H-D will not tell you much about it unles you are one of their technicians), I don't think the system is equipped with an engine temp sensor. Since the crank case sensor get it's pulses from pockets cut into the outer edge of the left side flywheel half, the sensor will have oil on it.
