Possibly, Take it to a mechanic and have a compression test first.

SOURCE: START & AVERAGE PROBLEM- HONDA UNICORN

I think the age of the bike gives a clue to what might be wrong. I'm guessing that either the rubbers on the vacuum carb slides have gone bad or the intake manifolds are old and cracked, or both. At any rate they are worth a good check. Be very careful if you have to remove the carb rack there are some delicate and expensive fuel feeder tubes between the carbs that are easily broken.

I notice that the engine is taking oil about a pint a month. There are no visible oil leaks

An engine will use oil as it becomes older. This is particularly the case if it is doing long journeys on a regular basis, such as motorway/highway journeys. They may use more oil than usual if they are driven at high speed on such journeys, just keep an eye on the level and keep it topped up, a once a week check should be sufficient.
If you are new to the vehicle it may be that you are noticing it more because your previous vehicles did not behave in such a manner. It may be that your driving patterns have changed and that is why the oil consumption has become noticeable. Assuming the vehicle is running correctly , and that you drive long distances I would say don't worry too much, just keep on top of it.
I have had diesel cars and if I do long journeys they have done exactly the same thing . If your engine is a high mileage unit seek advice about the oil to use, a manufacturer may have one that is designed specifically for high mileage engines.
I/We current run a Honda FRV with 183000 miles on the clock and have changed the recommended oil to one that offers more protection.
If the engine starts playing up, blowing out more smoke than usual, have the engine checked then.
It may be that you do have a leak, .... if there is no obvious leak around the rocker/valve cover gasket or the sump pan, or from the oil filter housing check the front / crank oil seal.
It may be there is nothing wrong at all.

Rattling Engine noise in idling conditions also.

That could very well be the case.

You could have some bad piston slap problems. Not uncommon to those models
