If your fuel gauge isn't working , it's not a fuse ! The gauge or the sending unit in the fuel tank is bad . If you had other thing's not working in the instrument cluster I would say probably a fuse. There is not a fuse just for the fuel gauge . Fuel Gauge Tech How To Properly Diagnose Faulty Fuel Pump Sending Unit
Well it could be the sending unit in the fuel take or it could be the gauge in the dash ! I had a Cadillac Seville I was checking at the dealer I worked at , hooked up the tester an tested the gauge . The gauge worked fine so I pulled the fuel tank an put in a new sending unit. It work fine so I sent the vehicle on home , two days later it was back for the same problem . I pulled the tank again an the fuel pump Assemble an noticed the baffle in the bottom of the tank had come lose wedged under the float arm of the sending unit ! That's what was wrong , it wouldn't go below half a tank . I 'm not saying this is your problem because this was back in the 80's an they used metal fuel tanks ! Yours is more then likely plastic !
Now a days you can hook - up a scan tool an check it !
Install a scan tool.
Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
With a scan tool, observe the fuel level parameter in the Powertrain Control Module data list.
Yes, the sending unit is in the tank. If you unplug the connector at the tank and ground the gauge's sender unit wire to metal, with key on, the dash gauge should jump to full or near full. This verifies the dash gauge is working properly, and the problem is with the sender unit in the tank. If the gauge doesn't move when grounded, then the gauge or wiring from tank to gauge is not correct. Good luck.
Could be 3 thing - the gauge on the dash, the wiring or the fuel level indicator in the tank. All three are not easily accessible - the best test would be to measure the voltage on the level sensor on the tank.
It usually means removing the fuel tank and start measuring. If its ok, supply voltage to the lead towards the fuel gauge. If the gauge doesn't move it's wiring or the fuel gauge itself.
Sounds like the Fuel sender unit in the fuel tank needs replacing however you may want to check that the electrical plugs are contacting properly,Check that the gauge is working by putting a piece of wire from the sender unit wire to the chassis,at the fuel tank sender unit plug,Turn ignition on while watching gauge if it moves toward fill turn ignition off and remove wire to chassis. If gauge moves it means from the fuel tank to fuel gauge is intact and not your problem.
