Yamaha virago problems

HI , I own a XV virago 250 1993 model , I have starting problems . I can only start the bike in a particular sequence , ignition on , cluch in , put into 1st or 2nd ( Out of neutral ) , lift stand up , back down , back up and it will start . Now ive checked continuity on the kick stand and its ok , and I have checked continuity on the clutch switch and its ok . If I try to start bike when stand is down and in neutral ( Neutral light comes on ) I have no spark . And when I get the bike running putting the stand down will kill the engine , and the other thing to prove the clutch switch is you cannot engage starter motor when in gear and clutch is not in . Does anyone have any ideas .Thanks

The kickstand switch is either bad or bent out of position. See if you can activate the switch manually. Does the bike run now? If so, the switch is bent out of position. If it still won't run, jumper the wires together until you can replace the switch.

hi,this might help, without looking at the bike it sounds like either the kickstand switch or the clutch lockout switch has failed, either switch failing will cause the problem you describe as they are both linked in the wiring harness..hope this helps...cheers ian

Make sure the side stand limit swithch is not at fault ,try by passing the side stand switch .This is a saftey feature and they have been known to give trouble while moving .It maybe a little W / D 40 on the limit button may solve this problem .

I suspect a broken or loose wire in the headlight bucket or where the harness goes around the frame neck. Check your battery connections, fuse connections, and ground wires. After you you have loosened and tightened all the bolts, plugged and unplugged all the wire connections(make sure wire colors match up), Starting the bike and turning the handlebars back and forth. If all this checks out you probably have a dirty switch. You said you checked all the switches but maybe the failure is load related. Out of desperation I take the 35 year old switches apart on my Goldwing, clean them , and put them back together. It is possible you have a dirty contact in your ignition switch (dirt across the connections) that could be the problem. It sure sounds like a main switch problem, but, the only switch you are activating, when you put it in gear ,is the neutral switch and the clutch safety switch. Recheck those systems or replace them first. Try bypassing the swiches one at a time to determine which one is the problem. Be happy your not on a mountain top 600 miles from home cleaning an ignition switch with a pocket knife.

Testimonial: "Re-checked all switches with a VOM and all were working. Problem was a bad connector under tank for side stand sw.. THANK YOU much for assistance "

1999 yamaha xv 535 when you start the bike there

I have a 94 virago that had that problem last year. First, is your starter switch releasing all the way out? Mine was sticking. Also the regulator-rectifier needed replacing, as it was no longer damping the current, which leads to surges, especially when revved. If you have a manual it will tell you how to check the current running through the bike. Replacing the regulator is cheap and easy even for me with my limited bike knowledge! Hope this helps. Charlie.
