What service do you recommend for a garaged 1980 Suzuki GS550L with less than 10,000 miles if it's been idle for 5 years and some gas has been in the tank for that period of time. I don't want to start up the engine and possibly damage the motor or transmission. The unit was running well before I hung up my motorcycle spurs. I loved that bike and the pipes have no apparent oxidation (like new), but I'm no longer a rider. I live in the Port Charlotte area of Florida. Any suggestions for a service shop?
Shoot WD40 into each cylinder to get them wet.
Change gearbox oil and oil filter. Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell. How bad is the rust inside the gas tank? I would consider a liquid tank liner if rusted. Google “ kreem fuel tank liner “ or go to www.http://www.4secondsflat.com/Fuel_Tank_Sealer.html
I forgot to add the following site >
Go to the site below where you can see a parts diagram for your specific bike. You will select the actual brand, year, model, etc., once you go to the site. Part numbers and prices are also shown. You can order parts from this site. In the event no price is shown on a particular part, the part is not in stock. www.babbittsonline.com/pages/parts/viewbybrandand/parts.aspx
.
Also google " vintage motorcycle parts suzuki " Parts can be hard to find.
