I have a 1977 yamaha 440 exciter snowmobile with intermittent spark. The switch has 3 positions, off, on, and lights. i have checked it with an ohm meter and it appears to open. But I am confused because if it was open why would I get spark intermittently? Also I have shorted the pin on the other side of the switch with a paper clip and I still did not get spark. Any suggestions?

If you are experiencing an intermittent spark, you may be having problems with the magneto / coil (ignition module) or CDI box if so equipped- that produces the pulses of high voltage for the spark plug; you may have damaged spark plug wires that are shorting out- check the resistance (using the Ohms setting on a multi meter) on the wires; and check to see if your ignition module is producing a strong spark...check the resistance on the primary & secondary coil. Or you can use an in-line spark tester- the tester is inexpensive and you can buy it at any diy auto parts supplier.

sounds like you have a poor earth connection, possibly between the coil and the frame, try quickly rigging up a cable from the mounting point on the coil, to a bare metal part of the bike (or nagative battery terminal if available), and try again.
Hope this helps

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Initially, a couple of checks when starting:

  • verify consistent + 12 on the black/white wires on the ignition coils and spark unit;
  • high pulsating ACV on the yellow and blue wires to the ignition coils from the spark unit;
  • low pulsating ACV (0.5 VAC) on the yellow & white pair and the blue & white pair to the spark unit from the pulse generator.
Postback results of tests.

Good luck and thank you for asking FixYa.

Ignition wont work on a vk professional

Check your fuses. use a ohm meter.

use a test light to see if you have power to your ignition switch.

if not check your relays.
if you have power to your switch turn it to the on position, see if you have power there. If you have power there, then turn it to the start position,see if there is power there. if not replace switch.
Hope this helps.
