Will not run without choke

I have a very similiar issue with my 1987 Yamaha Virago 1100. I have completely cleaned the Carbs, replaced new jets and carb kit. Air filter clean, spark plugs new, Gas tank clean, and vacum lines in good shape along with exhaust valves. It starts and runs strong but without the choke on I can not adjust the Idler enough to keep it idling. Does anyone have any Ideas on what could be wrong?

Have you checked for vaccuum leaks at the intake manifold? you can check by pouring water over the gasket area when/ if you get it running!

I HAVE A VIRAGO 250 & HAVE TO RUN THE BIKE WITH THE CHOKE ON OR 1/2 WAY & SOME TIME THAT DONT WORK

The choke adds more fuel, so you might have a fuel issue. If it won't idle, but you can rev it up and it runs okay then, you need to have the pilot jets cleaned up. (I would go through the entire carb)

Won't idle without choke

The pilot jet controls the air/gas fuel mix at idle . If the jet gets plugged up not enough gas gets to the emgine at idle. You will need to remove the carbs and float bowls and clean them, paying special attention to the pilot valve. Count the number of turns to remove the pilot screw and replace the same number of turns then turn counter clockwise 1/2 turn.

97 Virago 1100 will start and idle. No highway speed.

sounds like you have trash in your carbs u need to take bottoms off and run a piece of a wire wheel through the jets

Backfires

had a similiar prob with a triumph. It backfired at low revs, a delay between throttle opening and revs increasing and bike felt like it wanted to stall at low speeed. Got the Carbs cleaned to find out the problem was infact Failing Ignition coil. Get those checked first before commiting to replacing other parts.

Wont start without choke

I am having a similiar problem. bmw r 1100 s will only start with full choke and will die if I cut off choke or give it any throttle. This is my first bike and it has been sitting in a garage for 2 years. I took out the carbs, cleaned them and rebuilt them. I didn't find any residual in the carbs and they were very clean. Today, I was able to get the bike running and took it down the neighborhood but after the bike warms up it idles at 6K! Man... If I can't find any answers from this forum, I will probably drop it off at the motorcycle shop just down the hill from me. Any suggestions anyone? I think I will try to drain the fuel and give it new gas. But still....
