Use 10w40 motor oil in the gear box. Don't use any synthetic oils, oil marked "EC", or oil with "special" additives. Stick with the major brands; Pennzoil, Quaker State, Mobil or Shell.

Use TWO STROKE ENGINE OIL in the pump. If not using an automatic oil pump, then mix the gas and oil 32 to 1. That equals 4 ounces of TWO STROKE ENGINE OIL to one gallon of gas. NEVER use motor oil in the gas. Only two stroke engine oil.

Im having trouble getting my Craftsman tractor/ mower model 917250480 to start. What causes the oil dipstick to pop up when it cranks?

This (normally) comes from the piston moving inside the cylinder displacing air inside the crankcase.

Nearly the same volume of air that is compressed by the piston/cylinder/head (engine displacement) is likewise displaced inside the crankcase. There's just no significant compression on the crankcase side of the piston. The typical modern 4 cycle small engine crankcase is vented to the intake manifold to relieve crankcase pressure.

With the oil/fill cap properly seated, nominal crankcase pressure will not move the cap.

Why is it blowing off oil cap

Too much crankcase pressure for some reason? I've seen a melted piston cause so much crankcase pressure, it blew the pcv valve out of the valve cover and sprayed oil all over the engine compartment.

Is your oil cap threaded? If it is threaded, I don't think I've seen one of them blow off? Also, check crankcase ventilation system, pcv where applicable. Do you have a lot of blow-by from crankcase? I don't know your year--make--model or engine size?

Previous owner running 25/1 mixture in tank. 2stroke oil tank dry. How do I check whether the oil pump is injecting oil to crankcase.

It doesn't inject oil into the crankcase on a 2 stroke. It is mixed with the petrol at the carb. But, it is difficult to tell you how to check it as you haven't said the make and model of your bike!?!?!

My Gravely 2011 0 turn model number 915146has a briggs and stratton engine smokes like it is burning oil. I change the oil religiously with good 30 weight oil.

in dusty conditions the crankcase breather will clog , in which the crankcase builds excess causing oil to be forced by the rings.
clean the crankcase breather.

03 yzf 250f how to change oil

This engine holds one quart of standard Yamaha YZ 250 engine oil. The oil filter is located on the rear of the crankcase behind the suspension spring. The oil filter looks like a small metal can that is screwed into the top rear of the crankcase. On the bottom of the crankcase is the plug that will need to be removed to drain the oil from the crankcase. Anyone who owns this model dirt bike can complete this job in about 10 minutes.

93 Fatboy oil leaking from vent tube at air filter. oil level is good, not over filled, oil will cover the oil tank on a 100 mile trip

On your '93 model, the crankcase vent is down low on the engine behind the oil pump and it runs up to the air filter through a metal and rubber hose. I don't know how many miles you have on your engine but it you're getting any blow-by on the rings, this will increase the pressure in the crankcase. Most people simply re-route the crankcase breather underneath the bike and plug the hole on the backside of the air filter. Replace the metal line with a rubber hose and put a small filter in the end of the hose. Route the hose back behind the transmission and attach it to the transmission mounting plate just in front of the rear wheel.

This was the way the older Shovelheads were done from the factory for years until the EPA made them start running the crankcase vented air through the engine. In 1994, Harley went to the "head breather" system and moved the crankcase vents to the heads. Still, the oil mist in the vented air builds up in the air cleaner on these models as well.

Good Luck
