The truck has a standerd trans. I had just repased the clutch in it 6 mounths before the ECM went out. Now after i fixed the clutch my speedometer quit. I checked all the wires and all was well. I took it to a parts store to have a computer hooked up to it and they couldn't get a signal from the truck.

You failed ECU 101.
it says on page one in the FSM
do not replace the ECU until all pins feeds are checked for shorts.
car books too, and has been true ever before caremakers know what electronics is.... (pre 80s)

on most ECU, the key factory (im a retired, ET)
the outputs are key
if you short any output the current goes to infinity and the ECU burns up its driver transistor, fast.
one really new cars they have smarter transistors now that have overload roll back features. (i can cite examples>)

they scanned it , and the ECU will NO commicate
this is normal with blown fuse to ECU , blown fuse to pin 16 in the DLC scan port (car) or BLOWN to hell ECU. fact'
i can fix ECU, so ,now this well, retired, now.

there are like 10-20 (or more) output transistors on all ECU.
1 for each injector, v8 (unstated) is 6 transitors
and many more, for other things, called Actuators.
ISC? EGR? VSV valves, RELAYS. and more.

one top cause is injector shorts or the wire to it shorted to 12vdc.
The Injectors have 12v power all the time.
the ECU grounds (transistor) the injector to fire it. (energize it)
of you short those 2 wire, BAM. kiss off one ECU.
on almost all cars. on the road. (EFI)

so you say, what can i do.
easy.
get a ASE mech in the loop
or
DIY
DIY, you need a meter, to check all wires on the ECU.
for shorts to ground. or 12vdc ignition feed, battery NEG lug removed.
that is what you do. and inspect every inch of the injector harness for damage.

if you and pulled the ECU lid like i do an sea what part blew.
stinks, burned, cracked transistor or CHIP driver.
then that is what was overloaded
i then use my ohmeter, (Rx2) DMM, and find what external
pins connect to the BLOW, chip,
if its injectors, now you know the why.
if that dont pan out
i then open my FSM
i turn to ECU pinout page. i color each output in yellow highlighter.
(printed out page)
i then pull ECU.
battery is still not connected
i then ring out each output 1 by 1, each output for shorts.
so , what is a short.
that is easy. 0 ohms is short.
each acuator (fsm) has a coil ohms spec.
some are 30 for VSV
some are as low at 6 ohms. coils on relays.
but non are 0

if really unlucky, been there. we wiggle he harness if all outputs are good , we wiggle the harness, and bam, its shorted
on one car injector 6 was blowing the chip, line 6
so i put a 7amp fues on that line, before new ECU
now the fuse blew, so i found a well hidden harness short.
under and intake manifold, very hard to reach, (man had to come off)

that is how i do it.

if the line 6 blows, we replace the injector first.
as SOME Can short, only hot. do not waste an ECU for
1 funky injector, rebuilt are cheap, dirt cheap.

how is that, ask questions.

Well if you've had your ECM burn and got it changed and the same thing happen again then there might be a pilled positive wire exposed to the body or the chassis of your car touching at some point,my best advice is to trace all positive heavy wires leading from the starter and under the fuse board as well.i hope this helps thanks

I just replaced my ecm in my 2009 Pontiac g5 and it keeps blowing the ecm fuse as soon as it touches the terminal. What could be the cause of it blowing like that Everytime I try to replace the fuse?

Sounds like you have a short somewhere in the ECM harness. Chances are that the original ECM wasn't going bad, it has likely been a wiring issue the whole time. If you are no good at trouble shooting wiring issues, you need to find you a competent mechanic.

Your best bet is to take the vehicle to an automotive electrical specialist to have them resolve the problem there is far too many things that could be going on that could potentially lead to a fire which will inevitably be detrimental to your car but depending on the exact situation when it happens it could cause harm to you or possibly someone else

What happens when you hook a care battery up backwards?

Hello Glen, Bad bad things can happen when you hook up a car battery backwards. If your car has a high quality electrical system it might only blow out one or two main fuses. If not, it can cause havoc on the wiring system and burn out the alternator, computer, sensors, modules, and stereo system to name a few.

My 1986 dodge 600 keeps burning up the e.c.m.'s, what are some things to check

ECM's don't just go around burning up. Are your air intake tubes properly connected to the ECM? Are you sure that whatever problem you are having is actually being caused by the ECM?

Fuel pump fuse blown, what causes the fuse to burn?

Fuse's burn if a component in a system has an electrical failure wether it be permanent or intermittent or sometime electrical circuits have an electrical surge which can be caused by numerous things and the fuse will burn to protect the circuit. If your fuse is coninuously burning out then you need to do some investigative work. First I would locate the fuel pump relay and remove that then replace the fuse and see if it burns out, second if you can access it try to unplug the wiring to the pump and replace the fuse, third you should check the wiring going to the pump to see if there is damaged wiring. The last thing that may (but unlikely) be the problem would be the ECM that controls the system. If the first three fail you should try and have it properly diagnosed by good shop.

Have a 2001 dodge ram 5.9/v8 1500. cranks but wont start. if i leave the battery disconnected for a bout 15-30 mins it starts up. but then dies after i let it idle

What have you done for diagnostics so far? Is the engine light on? Did the ECM store any codes? Besides the current symptoms, was there anything else you can add to this issue ( like, did it happen out of nowhere, happens when its cold, hot, wet). I need more info, several things can cause a no start. But in your discription it sounds like a vacuum leak, I.A.C.valve, TPS sensor, or maybe map or maf sensor. But it is crazy to go further until you can run some diagnostic test and narrow down, the cause of your problem. I can say that it sounds like it is related to the ECM and when you disconnect the battery, it is putting the ECM into default, and as the vehical is running it senses the fault and causes the engine to die. Try to provide some engine codes if possible.
