Honda problem After 1day fails to start even though alternator charges at 14volts

double check ur alternator output for 14volts with a load like headlamps blower an wipers. alternator output is very critical to keepin an engine running an powered up. good luck

many alternators will not register at 850rpm.s as the regulator requires a higher out put than 12.5v to start to work It should be charging 13.5v at 950-1000 rpms and move up to 14.5 from that rpms to a max voltage of 15.5v.l It could have dirty slip rings and worn brushes so I would remove it and have it bench tested as car tacho's at idle can be out and it may be idling slower than it actually reads

Use a volt meter across the battery, and check the charge rate should not be higher than 14volts, if it's a lot more then its over charging and that could account for the smoking CID, it is not going to last long they don't like heat.

Check to see what the voltage is at on on the large wire on the back side of the alternator. If its more than 14volts (with the car running) than put one test lead on that wire on the back of the alternator and the other test lead on the POSITIVE terminal of the battery. you should see less than .5 volts. If you see 12 volts or more than the wire from the alternator to the battery is open or has a lot of corrosion somewhere.

Sounds like your system is not charging the rectifier in this model fails you should be getting 14 volts at the battery witb the engine running. I've changed one recently not an easy job get a meter reading across the battery 14volts is reqd

Sounds like the alternator / voltage regulator is malfunctioning or there is a bad connection to / from the alternator / battery.

Do you have a multimeter so you could test the alternator -- or could you take the car to a parts store such as Auto Zone where they could test the alternator for you ?

OK if only 4 months old, charge it with an external battery charger. Once vehicle is running the quick and still most valid test I make is:
Running, with no accessories on, charge volts on volt meter (not dash gauge) should read between 12.9 &14volts. Turn all accessories and headlights on high beam. Volts should not read below 12.5v at idle and should not creep lower after running at any time, even after ten or fifteen minutes. If voltaqge is not as specified alternator has failed and needs replacement.

Check the alternator at the battery terminal with a voltage guage and engine running. At the battery terminal with engine OFF voltage should be at least 12volts with engine running it should be at least 14volts. If it Not 14 volts with engine running then the alternator is UNDER charging and will trigger the light on the dash. Good luck and thanks for using FIX YA.

Start vehicle up and take vehicle to an AUTO-ZONE they will check the entire charging system for FREE. This could BAD battery or a BAD alternator or even maybe both. So let not guess or if you have a volt meter at home with vehicle running voltage at battery polls should be at least 14 volts and without vehicle is running battery should be at least 12volts how ever with voltmeter you can't LOAD-TEST battery or alternator, But if alternator is less than 14volts it may be charging too low and if batter is less than 12 after it was fully charged or after car had been running for at least 15 minutes> BATTERY IS BAD> Good Luck and contact if you need more help.
