Identifying the Correct Spark Plug and Gap

What is the correct spark plug and gap for my engine?

Due to the variety of engine and equipment configurations, your best source for spark plug information is your engine or equipment Operator's Manual. However, the following general guidelines will get you pointed in the right direction.
This guide provides the common spark plug part numbers used in our L-Head and Overhead Valve engines. For information regarding the service/replacement of spark plugs, please visit our Servicing the spark plug FAQ. Please be aware that the size/shape of the spark plug varies depending on engine design.

That's easy man! You will always hear, "You sir, need to gap this or that at EXACTLY .00071542 inches per square meter".

The actual "poor boy fix"-

Put your magneto back on there, and stick a business card from your wallet in between it and the rotor. Let the magneto pull itself to it, you center it, and give it just a hair of breathing room (to slide the card back out). Tighten 'er down, and you got it.

1.- If you can't pull the card out, it is too tight.

2.- If you pull the card out easily, too loose.

3.- JUST enough to pull it out, and have it drag just a bit on the way out is JUST ENOUGH!

Remember, on 4-strokes, they ARE forgiving, and can do miracles even if you try your best to destroy them.

SOURCE: What is the magneto gap for a 6HP Briggs &

Briggs lists it as .006 - .010 on this 6 HP L-head engine. The .010 width can easily be attained by using a standard sized business card as a feeler gauge (and it doesn't stick to the magnets in the flywheel). I double up the card, loosen the coil and let the magnets in the flywheel draw the pickup legs in until they press on the card, tighten up the retaining screws (threadlocker is optional) and your air gap is set.
