Why do I have this problem? I have a 1984 Goldwing. I have a problem with the engine. When it idles, it drops to 6-700rpms. The stop is set at 1000rpms. When I'm revving it up and down in a few seconds it will come back up to 1000rps but sometimes it just quits. I would appreciate any advice on why it does this.

Your problem is not octane related. It sounds like you have a vacuum leak, probably a hose. Check out this web site for info on how to diagnose your problem. www.hrot.org/martino/carb/index.htm

Your local Honda dealer might have a friendly mechanic to give you advice, either way you will need a hoist and a couple of small trolly jacks to shift the weight from mounting to mounting to avoid straining plates and fixings. Good Luck! PS There are several sites that offer free downloads of workshop manuals, trawl through these first, - The Yeti

check the fuel filter it sounds like it's pluged and causing too much back presure this is causing an over load in the fuel pump causing it to stop working or to presure lock

This sounds like a fuel flow problem. I suggest removing and rebuilding and cleaning the entire system, meaning Carbs, filters and strainers in the tank. Old fuel turns to gel, and floats absorb fuel, sometimes, so inspedt everything. When finished set carbs with carb sticks, both at idle and at 2000 RPM, using hand throttle.
