If this is a 4cyl., check the drive belt tensioner first, there is a TSB for a tensioner rattle that is a common failure . To test , remove the drive belt and start the engine and see if the noise is gone,
If your noise is a ratlling noise, more like a chain top end noise, then I would recommend first checking your oil level and condition. If the oil level is ok, you can remove the oil cap while the engine is running and look for oil lubrication on the valve train. It will probably splatter out a little. The most common cause of the noise is a failing timing chain tensioner. It allows the chain to have too much slack and slap against the guild rails. The tensioner is not too hard to replace and not very expensive either. If you have more than 100k miles, it is recommended to replace anyways. If your noise is more low pitched and more like a knock, I would recommend having a technician look at further.
Yep, most of these bikes do rattle on startup. The noise is from cam chain slack. A hydraulic tensioner is used in the engine on each side as there are two cam chains. The tensioner leaks down after the engine sits for a while and the chain rattles for a few seconds till the tensioner gets pumped back full of oil again. Once the chain is tight again, then no noise.
BMW came out with an improved tensioner (doesn't leak down as quickly) that you can install on your engine to fix the rattle. Note that it is much easier to change the RHS tensioner than the LHS one.
it can either be a worn tensioner or need for a valve adjustment. if you rev the engine and noise goes away, you need a new cam chain tensioner. if the noise remains or gets worse when you rev it up, you need a valve adjustment and should replac the tensioner anyway. 36,000 miles on the motor is definitely mileage for an adjustment if it's never had one.
does it sound like a chain rattle if so could be either cam chain tensioner needs replacing or even the cam chain itself is the noise bad because all chain driven cam engines make some noise
THE RATTLING YOU HEAR AT LOW R'S IS MORE THAN LIKELY THE CAM CHAIN RATTLING. THE CHAIN TENSIONER IS ADJUSTABLE TO A DEGREE BUT A BIKE OF THIS AGE(IF OVER SAY 10000 MILES) MAY NEED A NEW CHAIN TO ALLEVIATE THIS PROBLEM. LOOSE CHAIN CAN CAUSE CAM TIMING TO VARIATE CAUSING A SLIGHT MISFIRE. THIS MISFIRE COULD ALSO BE THE RESULT OF DIRTY CARBS. IF SO THEY WILL NEED CLEANING AND SYNCING.
The 93 model should have the sprung Guzzi timing chain tensioner so although it may not be the best in the world I wouldn't have thought it would make that sort of noise unless the spring's broken.,,,
