Do a Vin number search and you will find out what you have, the frames are identical as i have done complete builds of both the 125 and DT175MX and every part fits each bike here in the UK

Depends on the part. Lots of maintenance parts are available for older Yamaha units but no dealer is going to stock them waiting for someone to walk in the door looking for 35 year old parts for everything Yamaha ever made. That's what the big Yamaha warehouses are for. Call your local dealer or try Rock River Powersports in Wisconsin, they run Yamaha's MX racing program. If they can't get it, it's not available.
You don't decode it. It is only a production run series number. Mororcycles are like cars in that respect. It is the frame number, AKA the "VIN number", is what carries all the information. Call a dealer with the frame number and he can tell you year, paint color, specific model and more. They may have a problem if the bike is too old. Yamaha changed to a newer code system a few years back. Can I get a “very helpful” rating on this answer?
