Clean a starter motor to good start
Here is the problem (similar to mine)
I search for experience in fixing a starterproblem on my GSX1100F 1995 modell: When pushing the starter button (motor warm), the starter motor turned around the engine, but the sound of the starter was like spinning (a higher sound than normal) and after 10-15 seconds it sounded normal and gave start. After 6 month the same occurred at cold start. After installation of another used starter, the problem was gone until a few weeks and then re-appeared. The battery was new.
Professionals advised me to change the starter, but it did not fix the problem obviously. The next advice was to change the cables to ground and check. That I did. Now change.
I planned to change the starter clutch as the final try. When preparing to do so, I discovered that the composite washer behind the starter clutch nut on the crankshaft was broken an partly missing. The effect of this was that the nut become a little too loose, resulting in that the starter clutch was spinning on the crankshaft giving the spinning sound. This explained it all. I fastened the nut with Locktite without any washer. Now, the starter motor gives starter without any problems.
I guess you solved the problem in 2014 or sold the bike:)
It sounds as if the starter is turning but not engaging so I'd suspect the clutch or the gear is loose or without teeth, but even without teeth you'd likely hear unpleasant grinding noises. I'd expect the clutch and starter are all one unit. (They are on a car where space is less critical than a bike.) Try giving the starter a bang with the handle of a screwdriver or hammer to see if it frees the gears to engage while you're trying to start it. If it starts, replace the starter. You should get a re-core charge if you don't bring in the old starter. (You do with cars.)
Testimonial: "Thanks, I tried knocking the starter, nothing."
