On my yam yzf600r thundercat 98 the clutch slipping (only is 2nd gear), is there a way of adjusting it other than the adjustments to the cable. Or is the only soluton just to replace the clutch plates and springs?
The problem is in the gearbox not in clutch
These bikes are notorious for the dog ears rounding off on second gear and causing slipping and usually it pops out of gear. Take it by a shop and have a mechanic to ride it if you are not familiar with 2nd gear pop-out, and unfortunately if it is the problem it requires a full motor removal and tear down to solve. I have done a countless amount of these rebuilds and I would suggest if you are going to keep the bike and have the work done ask how much more for engine rebuild and start out with a fresh new engine and tranny.

After looking at other posts, found others with the same problem and that there is an adjustment to the clutch that can be done as the clutch wears as this bike has no auto adjustment. none stated how to do it, so will keep looking (found a service manual on the net but is says refer to clutch and drivetrain on how to adjust these.
also to test that its the clutch after a few post stated it was the gearbox, i put bike in 4th or 5th after is had reached running temp (for oil, coolant and transmission) and while the bike is held on the front brake let the clutch out and the slip apeared in that gear and the rev's jumped.
