Many things can contribute to low fuel economy, tire pressure, driving style, milage, and state of the servicing.
What sort of milage does the car have?
Has it had a tune up recently?
Air filter condition?
Fuel filter condition?
Transmission service if milage dictates?
Thanks for commenting Ed. Tire pressure is good, mostly highway miles, not a very heavy foot, only 24k miles on it. New air filter. Plugs good. Do you know what the coolant temp should be at? Maybe it would help to cover part of radiator....
Have you had it checked for codes, pending or active?

Check your spark plugs and see if they are the most current, this recall dealt with low power and fuel economy, it says 2009 but may have included other years.
most of the thermostats I see for that unit are 195 F, O2 sensors are heated, but should come to temp eventually, also a back pressure check to see if the converter is plugged.

Hi there... this sounds like a possible O2 sensor. Did autozone give you the code number? that would help a great deal if you had the code number . we can look it up and find out what exactly it could be.
SOURCE: check engine light flashing, car shaking and smells like gas
it could be anything have the code checked odds are it is a bad sensor
SOURCE: buick regal 92 3.8L Horrible fuel mileage
Sounds like you might have an oxygen sensor problem. Your catalytic converter(s) maybe defective or dirty. That in turn can dirty up the oxygen sensor. A defective oxygen sensor will send faulty info to the computer, interpreting the fumes as cold (even when the engine warms up). That causes the computer to adjust the fuel mixture to very rich, giving you poor gas mileage and the fuel smell. Hope it helps.

Something that might sound really easy, but please check your gas cap, make sure its on real tight or the rubber seal is still good,if not, get a replacement before you try and get any mechanics to touch your car. It might save your big bucks! All the best and drive safe. Hollywood Harv

if the sensor is located in the plastic jug take a small hammer and tap near the sensor gently most of the time there is a small airbubble trapped nera the sensor and it trips the sensor try that first
