No, if you have the 2.2 Eco Tech engine it is chain driven and the tensioner is ran off of oil pressure. I have had more than one come into the shop that had an oil leak and got low enough on oil that the pressure dropped, lost chain tension, and had the cams skip time bending the valves.

Is it true you can just remove the guides to stop the t/chain rattle

The timing chain guides are extremely important. Without the guides, the chain and gears will wear out MUCH more quickly. The only correct fix for a noisy timing chain is to replace the chain AND gears at the same time.

My Jeep Liberty sounds like an airplane taking off. It sound like it's coming from the rear. Also there are metal shavings in the gear oil. The dealer told me this was normal. Is this true?

The airplane taking off sound is most likely a hole or gap in your exhaust system. A few metal shavings are not a big problem. You should probably replace that oil to avoid wear but its common to find a few metal shavings in your gear box.

Automatic 2005 Mazda 3 hatchback will only start in Neutral.

Sort of...
There is a safety neutral switch that will only allow the car to start in park and neutral. If it starts in other gears or Not in park, then switch needs to be replaced
