Scooter not starting

If it starts by shorting then there is nothing wrong with the system AFTER the solenoid. If by pressing the starter button it just clicks then the solenoid relay may be at fault. If nothing at all when pressing then it could be a broken wire to the solenoid or a faulty button. This is assuming a good battery and all fuses are okay.

few things
new batteries only hold a little charge in them
so make sure it is fully charged
if your bike is making a clicking noise when you press the starter but is still not turning it is your starter solenoid
if it is making a clicking noise then your starter motor has seized and your solenoid is ok
if not making a clicking noise
it is possible your starter solenoid is broken and will need replacing
easy test is the starter solenoid has two electric poles on it
one going to the battery the other going to your starter motor
get a large spanner (wrench)
and with the ignition turned on
touch both poles with the spanner
("caution") this will spark a little so make sure there is no fuel close by
if the engine turns over
then your solenoid needs replacing

it's not a bug - it's a feature....some people would say...
- actually it happened on mine too after some time when it was new on both brake levers, that means it cannot be a short or something.
but, after some time I got used to it and even got to like it like that.

My 92 600 katana wont start. It wont even turn over, when i press the start nothing happens. the battery is good i charged it up and all the lights work but it still wont turn over.

If the clutch switch, the neutral safety switch, and the side stand switch are all working correctly, then test the starting system. When you push the starter button you should hear a click , so you know the button is working.Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Disconnect the two wires that activate the solenoid, test the two wires from the harness make sure the needle on your voltage meter jumps when you push the starter button, this means the button is good. Take a wire and jump the two posts on the solenoid or touch the two cables together. If your starter works, then you need a new solenoid. If you hold the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works you need new starter brushes. Anything else wrong with the starter and you need to replace the starter assembly , the manufacturer does not make replacement parts for the starter.

Well the good news is the click indicates the switch is working, when you press the switch the 2poles on the solenoide are joined together alowing the current to the starter,bridge the wires at the solenoide this should put power directly to the starter you wont need to press the start switch, if the engine does not turn over check the connections to both the battery and starter motor,

Tried to start my bike with new battery and only the lights come on and a single click come from around the battery area and the lights dim. on a 2003 suzuki 1300 hayabusa.

The starter button is supposed to turn the headlight off when you press it. The click says that the solenoid is being activated. Therefore the button works. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. Now short across the two terminals or touch the battery cable to the starter cable, if the starter works you have a bad solenoid. Push the starter button and tap on the starter with a plastic hammer. If this causes the starter to work your starter brushes are worn out and need to be replaced. If anything else is wrong with the starter you will have to replace the assembly I'm pretty sure Suzuki only sells the brushes and gaskets but no armatures, barrels,bearings,etc.

My 250 vt 1999 turn key on headlights everything works! when I press start button headlight goes out and bike dosnt start, take finger off start button head light comes back on.

Your starter button is designed to turn the headlight off when pushed in halfway so all the batteries electricity goes to the starter. The starter button is a two position switch. The starter button may be either dirty and need cleaning or is broken and needs to be replaced. If you push the button all the way in do you hear a click? If you hear a click by the battery , then the starter button is good. Follow the positive battery cable to the starter solenoid. With an old screw driver or a piece of wire touch the two terminal posts on the starter solenoid together. If your starter works now you have a bad starter solenoid. If you hold the starter button and lightly tap on the starter with a plastic hammer and the starter works, then you probably need to replace your starter brushes they are worn out.

My 2001 Yamaha R1 has an issue. I put the key in and turn it on, everything lights up fine, but when I press the start button nothing happens.

If you push the starter button and hear a click the starter button is good. If you do not hear a click, put power to the two skinny solenoid activation wires(+ and -), if you hear a click now you have a bad starter button. Clean or replace the switch. Follow the positive battery cable to the solenoid, short across the battery power cable and the starter power cable. If the starter works you need a new solenoid. If you tap on the starter with a plastic hammer while holding the starter button, and it works, you need new starter brushes.If you take the starter apart and the coils are burnt or the armature is shorted you need a new starter.

are you sure the clicking is comeing from the coil it sounds to me like a sticking starter soloniod try tapping the starter soloniod &starter with a light hamer this will quite often free it up do this while operating the starter button if this does work I would be replaceing the starter soloniod ASAP you might also want to check the voltage regulater & all the earths on the machine

If you turn the key on, you should get a strong headlight, horn and brake light when the battery is strong. If these are weak, then the battery is dying. If the battery is strong, hitting the start button should turn the headlight OFF momentarily. If there is no change or the headlight is not coming on then the starter button could be damaged. The battery voltage should stay above 11 volts when you are cranking the engine or loading the electrical system with brake light, horn or high beam activation.

The starter solenoid is down by the battery and if you jump across the big two terminals with a screwdriver (bike in neutral, please!) that will jumper the battery power directly to the starter motor. If the battery is good, the starter should start to spin the motor over. If the battery is good and there is no sound, then the starter motor is bad. If the starter motor spins over, either the starter solenoid is bad or the wiring to it is defective.

You need a a 12v test light to check the starter solenoid wiring circuits. A good Volt meter will tell you about the state of the battery (should be over 12v resting), as well as whether the charging system is working, once you have determined that the battery is okay. You need to monitor the charging system once the bike is running to see if that is part of the problem or not. It should crank out upwards of 13.5 volts when you rev it up to about 2,500 rpms.
