To get to know about the displacement look at the engine codes which are printed along the engine number on the cylinder block, mostly seen from standing in front of the car with the hood opened. Some of the codes are described as under:
S.No. Model Displ. Year
1.1ZR-FE AURIS 1.6L 2007-11
2. 1ZR-FE COROLLA 1.6 2007-11
3. 1ZZ-FE Avensis 1.8L 2003-09
Cilica 1.8L 2000-03
Corolla 1.8L 2002-07
RAV-4 1.8L 2005-09
4. 2ZR-FE Yaris 1.8L 2007-11
5 2ZZ-GE Corolla 1.8L 2001-05
Try unugging the MAF sensor. I don't remember if these will run with it unplugged but it's worth a try. If performance improves then try cleaning it with MAF sensor cleaner.
If there is no improvement with the above than I would suspect a plugged cat. I don't remember if this year has one cat or three. If it has one you can drop the exhaust ahead of the cat and drive it. It performance returns its a plugged cat.
If it has 3 cats than you will need to remove the upstream O2 sensors and use a back pressure gauge to check exhaust back pssure. You should see less than 3/4 psi at idle

Sounds like the alternator is bad. You can take it to Advanced Auto Parts or Autozone, and they will test both the alternator and battery for FREE. If the battery was bad, the car usually won't turn off once started because the car will be running off the alternator. Not to say I havn't seen a battery do that, but it is rare. To me it is the alternator. Plus, Autozone or Advance Auto will have your alternator in stock.
I would change all three. alittle expensive, but on this old of a vehicle I would not waste time and trouble. if this doesnt work then maybe some ignition problems. But i would guess that battery, starter, alternator, should do the trick
