How to change plug wires - 2001 Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Electra Glide Ultra Classic

Loretta,, Occasionally, a spark plug is "bad" right out of the box. But a single new plug and install it in the #1 cylinder. Also, on a 15 year old vehicle, it is likely that the spark plug wire wa damaged removing it in order to replace the plug. Good Luck.

Change the coils and the plugs. If you feel any hesitation or skipping its going to be one of the other causing it. Best change them all

not sure what you want to know. disconnect the plug wire from the plug one at a time then remove the plug with a 5/8 plug socket, reattach wire then repeat for other cylinders. or you can change the plug wire when you change each plug one at a time so you won`t get the wires crossed.

When did the problem start? Before you changed the wires and plugs? Or did it start, AFTER you changed the wires and plugs? Did the problem remain the same BEFORE & AFTER you made the changes?

1 - If the TOY ran fair to Okay before you did the work, then you may have done something wrong when you made the cahages. Check for correct plugs and firing order. Check for cross wiring. With engine runing pull one plug wire off each plug one at a time. Each pulled plug wire will slow down the engine. When you pull a plug wire that doesn't react and does not make any change ON or OFF that cylinder Plug.
Then that cylinder is not firing.

2 - Check for spark at that wire. If you do-not have Spark there, But the other wires do... the wire going to that cylinder is BAD.

3 - If you have the correct firing order and spark at all cylinders then the cylinder that did-not change the speed of engine has a compresstion problem. Bad valves, Piston or rings are bad... Major engine work and Major repair bill for the repair job.... GOOD LUCK....

Go back and pull each spark plug wire and put it right back on. There is probably a loose one. This is assuming that you didn't pull all the wires off at once when changing the plugs. If you did, the you put the wires back on in the wrong order. Then, you'll need to find a manual online for the correct wiring order for the plug wires.

If they are on in the right order, you need new plug wires. They don't last forever!

There is one sure fire way to know if your plug wires are in need of changing. Wait until it is dark outside and crank your car, pop the hood and if the plug wires are bad, you will see them arcing. What that term means is that you will see sparks coming from the plug wires on to the engine itself. When you change the plug wires out, do not skimp and go for the cheap ones, they break down under heat and will not be as conductive as they should be, spend a few more dollars and get the good ones, it will be worth it in the end. If you are changing out the plug wires, you should change out the plugs as well, and you should be good for at least 70k to 100k miles.

Change the plugs and wires one at a time as to not get confused. Purchase a quality set of custom plug wires that will fit perfectly. Put anti-sieze on the plug threads. Put some dielectric grease on the plug connector before snapping the plug wire in place. Route the plug wires exactly as they were originally routed.

Check to make sure you have not cross the wires and your firing order is off by one wire.
