Hi PR here. my 2006 Heritage softail has been standing in garage for 3 months over winter, connected fully charged battery, It turned over a couple of times then started to click as if a low battery,

form the sound of it you need a new clutch pak in the starter. Its pretty simply fix. don't let them sell u a new starter just a clutch pak for the starter. I take it by spinning u are not talking about the motor turning over. If its turning over then its not the starter.

usually on the left side, right below the seat there should be a place to put the key when you turn the key it will pop the rear of the seat up, and just lift it off. there is the battery. you should take the battery out every winter season and also follow other winterizing steps with the fluids.

First, take the battery out and take it to an automotive parts house and ask them to load test it for you. If the battery is good, put it back in the bike and reconnect the cables. Make sure they are clean and tight.

There are two things that could be making the clicking noise, the starter relay and starter solenoid. The relay makes a soft sound and the starter solenoid makes a loud clicking. Let's start with the starter relay. It is located on the front side of the rear fender. Look at the front side of the rear fender just below the oil tank. The relay is a cube looking thing about 1 inch on all dimensions with about five wires running to it. These fail quite often as water gets into them. When you press the starter button, you can hear a faint click. If you suspect this is the problem there is a way to test but you'll need a test light.

Look at the end of the starter on the right side of the bike under the oil tank. You'll see a pentagon shaped (five sided) plate. Up near the top of that plate you'll see a plug with one green wire running into it. Unplug this connector and stick your test light probe into the plug. Turn the switch on and press the starter button. If the test light lights up, the starter relay is good and your problem is in the starter solenoid. If the light does not light up, replace the starter relay.

You can get a rebuild kit for the starter. They are not difficult to install but you may have to pull the starter off the bike to repair it. Once you figure out what the problem is, repost and we'll go from there. Good Luck!

Ok, the first thing to do it take your battery to an auto parts store and ask them to "load test" the battery. Just because you charged it doesn't mean it's any good. Especially if the battery seemed to come up to full charge very quickly.

If the battery test good and all you're getting is a click out of the starter, first check all your connections to make double sure they are clean and tight. If they are, there is a five sided plate on the end of the starter's solenoid on the right side of the bike. It has three small bolts that holds it on. Remove the bolts and remove the plate. Remove the large plunger and spring. Inside, you'll see two large copper contacts. One or both of these contacts are probably pretty well burned down. One will have an "arched" looking area in it. This is where the large washer on the plunger has made repeated contacts and has burned the contact down. It is NOT supposed to be there. The copper contacts should be smooth.

You can purchase a "rebuild" kit to replace these two contacts and the plunger. Much less expensive than purchasing a starter and much less work.
