The engine died while driving checking the crankshaft bolt was comming out i took the timming cover off to check chain everything seems fine but the motor still sounds like its turning freely like the chain isnt even on it dont hear any noise and chain doesnt appear loose
Hey Eugene
I would recommend taking this to a qualified professional... this sounds serious... sorry,
i would really like to try fixing this myself if possible just need some suggestions on what it may be
Hey Eugene, if the timing chain and accompanying sprockets have NOT moved..(changed timing), just clean the bolt,,put some thread locker on it (red locktite).. tighten securely... put everything back in place,, if it runs good and does not make noise... you should be fine.. Good luck!!

not all scanners a created equal. You need to check for trouble codes...............but it must be fixec by now.
SOURCE: timing chain mark diagram for a 94 grand am????
Haynes lists the entire procedure for setting the position of the cams etc. Positioning of these is critical...If off by even a slight amount the valves WILL strike the pistons and destroy the engine. DO NOT use any parts made by SA Gear...They have no quality control and will deny any claim made against them. Make sure that the chain guides are in good condition and that the chain tensioner is operating properly.

On a 2.4, there are no timing marks...There are holes in the cam gears that need to be aligned with corresponding holes in the head.
Though it's not terribly difficult to do, it must be done precisely according to instructions or valves will hit the pistons and destroy the engine. You can find instructions for this procedure in haynes and other vehicle service manuals. (too long to write out here).
Remember...this is an exact install...you cannot just get close!!!
Good luck! Post back if you need further specific instructions with any part of the job.
