I need piston rings for 1991 7.3 IDI. What do they mean bore size Std., .020, .030, .040?


.20 .30 and .40 are oversizes. you have to measure the cleaned up bore to order the right ring set. if you are going to replace the rings you should get the cylinders bored and honed

you will not get oversize bearings for big ends and mains
you will get .010" undersize bearings if the shaft has been ground .010"
get them from any engine reconditioning shop or good auto spares retailer

Do oversized pistons last as long as standard ones in 2stroke dirt bikes


Nope they don't as they are for rebored cylinders that have worn out of spec so wider pistons are required to take up the extra bore diameter

I got a 1983 xr80. What are the piston/cylinder clearance specs.. stock? And how much can I hone/bore out?


most piston /ring kits come in .010" , .020",.030",.040" oversize
most engine re-conditioners use cnc borers set to an over size and bore to that
after honing to get the correct cross hatch pattern in the bore , that is it
the ring gap is what is important and it should be around .003" per ever 1" of bore
so for a 3" bore the gap should be around .010"
experience has proved that if the cylinder is bored to say .020" oversize then when the gap for .020" oversize rings is checked ,it generally comes in around .015 and even as large as .020"
max specs for ring gaps is .025" which is for a worn cylinder
just honing a bore is a waste of effort as bores wear in a taper ( larger at the top than the bottom and this taper increases the wear of the new rings and can lead to broken rings
the ridge at the top of the bore has to be removed to allow the piston to come out easily and to prevent piston failure when the new rings are fitted
have a talk with engine reconditioning shops and then make an informed decision
remember that if the cylinder can be separated from the crankcase , you can buy standard or oversize piston/ring/cylinder sets as assemblies so there is no need to bore out or hone.

What is the sizes on new & worn rings on Bajaj RE205 Piston


the size of the ring will be determined by the bore size
so if it is a 3"(75mm) bore the ring will be that size if placed in the bore separate to the piston and pushed square and to the bottom of the bore the ring gap will denote if standard , worn or oversize to standard
new rings in new bores will have a ring gap of around .010"
worn rings will have a larger gap up to .040" and will have sharp edges where the ring lands wear the rings
over size rings in standard bore probably won't even fit in the bore to start with
ring sets are bought in standard size , .010" over size,.020" oversize,.030" oversize,.040" oversize with the oversize equalling the final hone of a machine bore
so if the machine shop bores the cylinder out to .020" oversize then you need .020" oversize rings to maintain the correct ring gap
from experience I have found that if I follow that rule , on measuring the ring gap at the bottom of the bore the ring gap is about .015" or half worn out
I counter this by getting the next size ring .030" and filing the ends of the rings at the gap to obtain the .010" gap This has produced better longer lasting repairs

No, You need to get the specs on that bike,and see what the standard bore is on it. It may be that your standard bore is 45,and the cylinder needs to be bored out to accept a new oversize piston.

How do I find out if I have a #1 piston or a # 2 piston and what is the differance. I want to rering the motor. thanks jeff I have 2004 125 ktm sx


Look on top of the piston it will be nothing = stock bore
.010 = 10 over ect
.020 is 20 thousand over stock

Piston sizes


The A stamping is not an oversize, oversizing is in 10thou\0.25mm increments, so it wouldnt even fit in the barrel.or if it was undersize it would just rattle around.
But you need to check for proper clearance.
you can check for proper clearance, with a feeler gauge between the piston skirt and the barrel, it will be around 2 thou(check your manual), as long as the clearance is within tollerance it will be ok.
check it in a few places to make sure the barrel is not out of round or tapered, an inside micrometer would help, but the feeler gauge will be pretty good if youre carefull

I have a Vintage 1978 Carabela 450 MX it needs a piston and jug. Any ideas?


search in the yellow pages for your local motorcycle repair shop they should be able to provide you with a phone # for a machine shop that will bore the jug out to accommodate the appropriate oversize piston just make sure you acquire the .030" over sized piston first or .010" O.S piston because you will get it much cheap than them through bikebandit .com
