SOURCE: 1997 Neon Starter Solenoid Engages,,BUT

ase mechanic here, sounds like the starter is on its way out, will have to replace since you cleaned all the connections, but in the mean time try hitting the solenoid portion with some object and see if the engine starts. if so the starter needs replacing.

your barking up the wrong gum tree witht the starter motor ,you have an electrical supply problem on the battery terminal area with more than one wire connected or a dodgy earth cable from the engine to the chassis .i would be inclined to check and fit another earth cable from a good connection on the engine -(bell housing) and run it back to battery terminal to eliminate all posibilitys .before anything else ,make you own if you have to but only use copper cable .this is my last question for tonight ,have to go pick er indoors up from work now

Mazda rx8 won't crank over

Do you mean it will not spin over or just spins but does not start? If does not spin at all, either dead battery, bad battery connection (very common) or bad starter solenoid. Try turning on head lamps to test. If lamps don't come on, then bd battery or bad connections. If they come on normal, try to crank and if they dim, weak battery, bad connections or more likely bad solenoid or starter.

Turn key get nothing jump starter and sylenoid just spins

i cant dope out that symptoms.

does it crank or not. be clear there.

no car starts (but my 6sp) if it dont crank.

on A/T cars cranking is a first thing. so does it.?

Solenoids do not spin, the stroke only , it a linear motion.

the Sol. moves the pinion and the main contactor switch only.

my guess is the Starter spins and the crank don\'t spin,

you hear the starter motor spin up, it sings. like bird.

that means the starter /solenoid are bad. (crude)

if the battery is good and or jumper starting off a running car.

It can just be a dirty starter pinion, clean it , repeat.

fixed many for this. i have.

battery cable lugs clean, and good. no green rust.

bad cable usually just make a loud THUNK sound. no spin.

How to check a starter on a 1988 mighty max

Turn on your headlights so you can see their reflection (garage door or wall) Engage starter. If the head lites go out or dim the motor is drawing power from the battery. If the motor won't spin then look for a weak battery, bad battery cables (check both of them), bad ground strap between the frame and the engine, and lastly check the motor for high temperature. If the head lites do not dim when trying to engage the starter then look at the solenoid that applies power to the motor. Don't ignore the ignition switch either.

When I try to start, why does it sound like the starter is spinning and not engaging anything?

You may need to take the starter off and have it bench tested.
The problem could be the starter drive, or you could have some missing teeth on the flywheel. The drive is supposed to extend when the starter spins to make contact with the teeth on the flywheel. You could also try turning the crank a few inches and try the starter again.

05 grand cherokee wont start .full power lights dont dim when cranking then it starts like nothings wrong. i tried jump starting it then i climbed under it and hit the starter and it started

If the starter motor spins at high speed, but doesn't turn the engine until you whack it, the starter gear is not engaging the flywheel. Probably the engagement fork or the starter gear is worn out or sticky, or the solenoid isn't pushing it far enough.

198 isuzu rodeo starter clicks but doesn't engage and lights do not dim. alarm chirped unlocking. why wont it start?

Your battery has enough amps and voltage to power up the accessories, but does not have enough amps to engage the starter motor. The click you here at the starter is the solenoid trying to allow the starter motor to turn. Either replace the battery and/or check the battery connections for corroded terminals.

I think my starter solenoid is bad. When I try to start my truck it will turn over and then start clicking?

I think your battery is the more likely the problem. If the solenoid did not engage you would hear a high pitch whine with no click. The clicking is the solenoid trying to engage the starter gear but it only initially engages until the battery current drops causing it to oscillate. Turn on your dome light and see if it dims when you try to start it. If it does try to charge or jump the battery.

CLICKING NOISE.WON'T START.

Sounds like a bad battery. Try jumping the vehicle. If it won't start from a jump then you need to look at the Solenoid.

Battery is charged. Went to start car at the end of the day, and there is a mechanical clicking sound (all dash indicators light) but the starter motor won't engage, and car won't turnover. Bad...

Do this to check if it's a bad battery, turn head light's on and try to start it, if head light go to dim or off, bad battery not holding a charge, if light stay on ok, then this will take two people tap on the starter kinda hard with a hammer or something you can reach it with while some one hold's to key to start, if it start's bad starter or trys to turn engine replace it.
