'93 4.3 liter A/T V6 Sonoma dies when in gear. Runs rough, but okay when in park, but when its put into gear it always dies, brake pedal is also very difficult to depress. Service Engine light came on yesterday during a 500 mile drive, but after being shut off and later started and driving another 2 miles, it was off. Was having issues with hard starts, but added fuel injector cleaner to last 2 tanks of gas and now it starts right up.
May be having problems with engine vacuum leaking. Pull the large hose going to the vacuum operated brake booster and block off the hose end with a cork or other plug. Start the engine and see if it runs more smoothly. Set the emergency brake and put in gear--does it idle smoothly? If so, then you likely have a bad vacuum leak within the booster unit. Restore the vacuum hose to the cylinder and arrange to replace the cylinder.
