The clunking is the belt jthat moves the light is jumping the sprocket gear.
Solution - Unlock the scanner. About 1 inch below the right lid hinge near the USB jack is a fimmed piece of plastic. Slide this left or right to Lock/Unlock the scanner.

Actually, Epson NZ was able to help me quite quickly. They said:
'At the back of the scanner is a sliding tab that is used to lock the scanner for transportation'. [Somehow this tab had been moved to the lock position, probably when rearranging things on my desk!]
