Could also be not enough fuel causing a lean pop, ignition timing not set correctly, faulty spark plug, lack of valve clearances or blocked jets in the carbs.
Also Weak battery and blocked air filter will cause poor starting or lack of. If the bike has been stood for a long time then the fuel might have turned blocking the carbs but i doubt that, though it might be possible. With your poor starting you might of fouled the plugs in turn making it hard work to start.
Take the plugs out and turn the engine over a few times this should force any unburnt mixture out the cylinders.
clean your plugs and put them back in and try again

Fill it with oil until the oil just touches the bottom of the clutch basket. hould be a little less than a quart. Don't use motor oil, unless it is Harley's Syn 3.
