Voltage Regulator Problem?

The battery in my 03 Electra-Glide Classic stop charging(volt gage low) while riding ultimately dis-charging the battery. All connection appear clean and tight w/good ground. Is there a way to test the Voltage Regulator with an meter? At $198.00 to replace the regulator I don't want to be guessing!

2001 hd ultra classic after running for a while and idling at a light volt meter pegs at 16 volts and other gages go erratic,

sounds like your voltage regulator has gone bad, voltage spikes like that can damage a lot of the electronics on the bike. Would not operate it until you fix the issue.

2004 ultraclassic while driveing the volt meter goes from 14 down to 10and then backe up, does this most of the time while driveing, while stop at idle it stays at 14 lights dont dim or anything. whats...

Could be a number of things. Check the stator plug connection, the battery connections and the connections at the back of the volt meter. My guess is that something is loose and not making a connection while riding because of the vibration from the bike when riding. Also check the ground wire from the voltage regulator.

What should the average volts be for a 2001 HD UltraClassic?

13.8-14.2vdc should be about normal when riding and the charging system is working properly. Have you checked the voltage regulator?

No start 09 Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Sounds like your charging system is not charging the battery.

Put a volt meter on the battery, run the engine up to maybe 2,000 RPM. The voltage must be at least 13.8V, but not more than 14.5.

If that is all OK, your battery is worn out, and is not holding sufficient reserve. It would need to be replaced.

While riding the voltage regulator ranges from 16 to 10 volts. the lights dim and the engine came light on for a couple of seconds .what is my problem?

If power out of the regulator is down to 10 volts then the regulator is naff - replace it!
If power going into regulator goes as low as 10 across the phases then the alternator needs rewiring (not very likely)

Hope this helps (if so please mark as very helpful)

Voltage reulator puts out 14 volts and engine light comes on engine rpms go down voltage goes down light goes out until rpm increase

It sounds like the voltage regulator is doing what it is supposed to. The charging system should put out between 14-15 volts when the battery is fully charged in your bike.

Now what is causing your engine light to come on is beyond me.

Voltage problem when running bike

The voltage regulator should present 13.5 to 14.5 volts at the battery to charge it properly (engine at fast idle). I'm not sure if the V regulator is adjustable or not. If not, then it probably needs to be replaced. The alternator appears to be trying to do it's job, although it may have an open diode or winding if the alternator is 3-phase. An oscilloscope is the best tool to check for all three phases working properly. Good luck!

2003 Ultra Classic. Above 2000RPM, the volt meter gauge pegs past 16, the odometer blinks, the speedo jumps back and forth, the red engine light comes on and the radio cuts in and out. At idle or below...

Dont do that, your voltage regulator is faulty. It is in the alternator. Max charging voltage should be 14.2 and min 13.6v. Chk battery water level. but get an alternator 4 sure

Harley 03 Ultra overcharging, 16 volts

14v is not overcharging. 16v is pushing it. I'm with the regulator opinion, but I would also load test your battery. If the charging system thinks your battery is low it will try to compensate by putting out max voltage, putting additional strain on the regulator, which in turn overcharges the battery... creates a vicious cycle. Is the regulator in a spot where it gets quite warm? They have a tendency to overcharge when hot. If that is the case, try relocating it or directing more airflow over it.
